    Pop can + chocolate = Fire (?)

http://www.bulletinboardforum.com/m/fire.htm Has anyone ever tried something like this? I spend part of my lunch polishing a coke can with a peppermint patty, but I can't seem to get the degree of pollish these folks show. Still, seems like a good camping alternative to matches....unless the...

    Do you like plots?

DMs need to strike a balance between intricate game worlds and fast moving, fun ones. The goal, afterall, is immersion--the point where the players are engrossed in the world. On the one hand, I like backstory--it helps a player understand the dungeon--and often helps disarming traps and...

    DM For Hire - Rates?

As a player, I'd say $5, but only in goods: pizza, beer, mt. dew, and chocolate. As a DM, I'd say whatever the players want to give me in exchange for the merciless destruction of their characters.... I mean, um...yeah.

Game Calendar. Do you have one?

I like to let campaign events dictate the calendar/season. I would not spring two "solstice celebrations" in different towns back to back. I do keep track of days on an adventure, though, particularly if PCs are trying to unload loot too quickly.

Natural resources and where they are found

Coal is associated with mountainous/hilly regions because the squeezing and heating of the earth's crust (metamorphism) that builds hills helps transform organic matter into coal. For a fantasy setting, don't forget the role of peat--low-grade organic material which burns with a smoky, low...

Guns as the weapons of the Elite

My problem with firearms being the "elite" weapon of a warrior caste comes from my geek heritage. Simply put: "This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or as random as a blaster, but an elegant weapon for a more civilized age." Now a real laser pistol....that's a civilized weapon.

    Your first car

1987 Reliant K. Nothing says pimpin' like a great white Reliant. We called her Tic-tac, mostly because my grandmother (who I got the car from) was a Tic-tac addict, and because the car started making a funny tic-tac, tic-tac noise when you pushed her above 65. I miss that car.

    Best... Geek T-Shirt... Evar...

Technically speaking, shouldn't Luke be on the shirt? I mean, Vader/Anniken's father was a milk man on Tatooine.

A game with good and evil but no neutrals?

"Either you're with us or you're against us." This type of sentiment is one of the classic mistakes of history which mankind seems so desperate to "learn from," but which it seems never to. A Good-Evil world, with no other options (neutrality is sometimes just saying, "I don't want to chose...

Las Vegas man can summon UFOs...on demand?

Some UFO sightings are just weather balloons. In the past couple of years that I have been casually looking up, I have seen three unusual airborn objects. One was a large sheet of plastic or somesuch being blown on the wind, one actually was a weather balloon, and the third, frankly, I have no...

    Low-level planar travel

You could just curse the amulet of the planes and not tell the PCs. Have the curse activate if they attempt to sell the amulet.

The Ethics of Slaying half-fiendish silver dragons

I just imagine the Father of Wyrms as a really laid back demon fella, wearing a comfy plush robe, with his raptor-like feet up on an ottoman and a mint julep in his claw-like hands. "Yeah, I once sired a dragon. Sired quite a few as a matter of fact. Yep. Ye ain't lived if you ain't sired a...

    Sci-fi likes/dislikes

Having just watched the first (and only...) season of Firefly this past week, I can't help but think that it would make a good game universe: familiar planets, familiar tropes, enough weirdness to be fun (hooray for psionics....), and no aliens. Provided no aliens is your thing. Also...

    Sci-fi likes/dislikes

I think for sci-fi to be really fun, you have to take a setting with unlimited potential for growth. That is, the GM has to be able to make up new planets, new aliens, new anything, on the fly, without folks being able to pounce and scream, "That's not canon!" Star Wars d6 is that system for me...

    Plot brainstorming thread

Don't forget the value of very simple codes, cyphers, and tricks like acrostics. Someone with access to a magical book might not want just anyone (read: lo-int orcs) reading it. You could use an arcane calendar system to date the "entries." Only significant research in the best magical...
