    One shot adventure?

Ditto. Thought the same thing. Just didn't want to open that can. Not to be too off-topic, but I played an Essentials Cavalier last night at a table with 4 other "classic" PCs and no one could tell the difference. Except for that fact that my PC felt more "old school." ... Which is what I...

    One shot adventure?

If you have a DDi account, you can access the Chaos Scar modules on the WotC site. They're all "delve format", meaning 2-4 encounters, 1-2 skill challenges, and designed for a balanced party of 5 players covering each role. Honestly, the low-level ones can all be played inside 5 hours, perfect...

Community leads to new DnD Interest

Not really. However, my in-laws, who knew of my gaming hobby and how I converted their daughter into a gamer, both now have a much greater understanding of what we're doing when we get together with our gaming groups on a our game nights.

    party wants railroading

On the other hand, it's entirely within the realm of possibility that the OP has a group of players who prefer the hack 'n slash style of gameplay. There's nothing wrong with this, except, as the OP mentioned, it bores him. What you have to do, ffy, is ask your players exactly what they want...

What's to watch in S&S/SciFi these days?

It's on the air currently, but HBO is in the end-stages of production of A Game of Thrones, based on the book of the same name by George R. R. Martin.

VT Beta getting CB/AT importing this week

Veeeeeery interesting. Might this mean that they're actually considering opening up the VTT to non-DDi subscribers when it goes gold?

    February: What are you reading?

I see what you did there. ;) Seriously though, House of Leaves is an AWESOME book. I own two copies - one autographed hardback that is my precious, and one paperback that I loan out to the unwashed masses.

    Level Up!

I'm making a much more concerted effort with this Dark Sun campaign to sandbox things. I want to give the PCs the opportunity to shape the campaign arc, and I think this "xp-free" method might help me do that. I'll provide the oppressive, deadly world, and them decide how they want to survive...

I really hope the new adventure path is Mass Effect

*in light of the "it's a book" psuedo-announcement, is hoping in vain that it's based on Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space universe* Conjoiners and Inhibitors! Nevil Clavain!

    Level Up!

The discussion in this thread has inspired me. I've pitched going XP-free to the group for our upcoming Dark Sun campaign. I don't like the idea of having to cram 10 or so encounters/skill challenges/quests down my player's throats per level in Dark Sun. I want the emphasis to be on survival...

    February: What are you reading?

Just finished The Hard Sci-Fi Renaissance, and I'm about to try an read The Fellowship of the Ring for about the fourth time, mostly just because I'm waiting on my wife to finish up the next Dresden Files book. Yeah, that's right. Never actually read any Tolkien. Tried, but just could never...

I really hope the new adventure path is Mass Effect

Has anyone mentioned Alternity yet? I've got a player who bought into it big time when it came out in the 90's and would love to see it return, and I doubt WotC's going to do it any time soon. What are the chances they'd license it out to someone who would make it compatible with 4e rules?

    Level Up!

You could very well be right, but I think it comes down to game style more than anything. I reward XP, 100% as detailed in the 4e PHB, but my game is very casual. We play once a month, and it's as much a social gathering as it is a game night. XP just isn't the motivating factor to show up...

    2/7 DDI Update

Fair enough, Quickleaf. To be completely fair on my own behalf, I should have clarified and said I wasn't directing my criticisms 100% in your direction - just sentiments a lot like yours. I've seen a lot of people who are justifiably unhappy with the CB, Adventure Tools, and DDI in general...

    Level Up!

I'm curious about this. Maybe I just have a different group of players, but I've never DM'd for anyone who's been serious when they said "we should kill them for the XP," or "There's got to be some orcs around here we can kill. We're close to leveling..."

    2/7 DDI Update

I think you're misunderstanding my criticism of Quickleaf's comment. I get the unhappiness with the current CB. I can easily wrap my mind around how someone would feel cheated or ripped off with their DDI subscription. I just don't think it's fair to holler and yell about not having feature...

    2/7 DDI Update

Would you prefer they ignore those things in favor of adding to the pile of things that need to be supported by the CB? Because it sounds like you're complaining about WotC actually addressing issues and complaints that many people had with the online CB. They left that stuff out, and people...

What's your earliest memory of d&d?

Some time during the winter of early 1994, Study Hall, Sophomore year of High School. My friend Nate decided he was going to introduce me to the game (AD&D 2e), since he had earlier convinced me to try out Magic: the Gathering. So, we sat in study hall, and he helped me make my first...

    ENantiodromia

Another forum I've frequented for years actually gives an honorary award at the end of the year for the person who derails the most threads (or seems to, anyway) during the course of that year. Originally, it was intended as a snarky, sarcastic way to say "Hey, stay on topic, bubs." It's...

    Ravenloft-Your Experiences

I DM'd 2nd Edition AD&D almost exclusively in Ravenloft. I played in it first in several "Weekend of Horror"-style sessions before I DM'd a Ravenloft-only game. LOVED playing in it, LOVED DM'ing it. The setting allows for some real cool role playing experiences, and really is secondary to the...
