    Star Wars Spoilers Thread [Spoilers]

For those who are looking for deeper answers, some spoilers/info from the novelization (which is based on an earlier draft of the film): http://www.dailydot.com/geek/star-wars-force-awakens-novelization-highlights/ And to add to Umbran's comments about building up Kylo Ren in this film, that's...

    Fury over Black Hermione Granger

I think adaptations should stay true to the source, not necessarily other adaptations. Long live PoC Hermione! Full disclosure: I've never read the books or seen more than 20 minutes of the movies.

    Star Wars Spoilers Thread [Spoilers]

As pointed out, Luke doesn't lose very many fights at all. I will also point out, to the best of our knowledge, Luke didn't really get in many fights before getting his lightsabre either (the Tuskan Raiders got the drop on him). Rey has apparently for some time carried around and fought with...

    Star Wars Spoilers Thread [Spoilers]

I've seen this sentiment a few places. I disagree with it, but even allowing for it, how is Rey's treatment any different than Luke's or Anakin's treatments in A New Hope or The Phantom Menace respectively? Arguably, Anakin's is worse, because while we knew he'd grow into a good pilot and...

    Star Wars Spoilers Thread [Spoilers]

I only saw it once, and was a bit in the giddy/excited mood, so I may be giving it more slack. That said, a quick/blind calculation doesn't mean a hyperspace lane wasn't used. And one change to the Falcon was made (although neither Han or Rey considers it an upgrade), so maybe others were too.

I haven't read much of the EU, but yeah, to me Han always came off as more (over?) confident and extremely lucky as opposed to best of the best of the best.

That doesn't mean they didn't calculate anything - it just means they had a very narrow opening to start out from (the docking bay opening).

Finland to pay all its citizens 800 euros a month to fight unemployment

One societal role that I haven't seen mentioned that I think is prime for such a guaranteed income is that of a stay-at-home parent. Such a person is not lazy, or disabled, or very often under any other condition that 'warrants' government assistance. Teaching them a skill is superfluous...

What piece of media did hype kill for you?

I'm not sure if hype itself ever killed my interest in something, but there are a great number of shows and movies whose hype got me excited, but that I never got around to watching.

    Your SHIELD job

I'd want to be a tech, because they always seem to have improbable and unexpected aiming skills when needed ;)

Finland to pay all its citizens 800 euros a month to fight unemployment

At first blush it rankled me too, but then I realized (or perhaps, just hoped because I don't know how they do taxes), but a good income tax process handles this just as well - rich people may technically get richer, but if it's set up that they pay more income tax, it can work out, and you...

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

I'm not an economist by any means, but I don't think it's a poor assumption that the US has a slightly larger GDP (or whatever metric is used to measure the size of an economy) than even some other first world countries like Canada and the UK; sometimes looking at percentages is more telling...

    Christian Persecution vs Persecuted Christians

My understanding is that courts never pre-emptively rule on legality of stuff. At best, all you can ever do is ask a lawyer, "Is this legal?", and if the lawyer says, "I think so due to...", you cross your fingers and wait to see if anyone with standing in the case challenges your lawyer's...

    Christian Persecution vs Persecuted Christians

Ok, I can see that as a reasonable position, even if I disagree with it (it's a pessimistic view of the law, whereas despite ample evidence, I at least try to view things optimistically). That said, I can certainly still see a government verifying they're on the right side of their law before...

Or against the law of any country it passes through en route... Like Syria and Iraq.

    Christian Persecution vs Persecuted Christians

Not sure what you mean by 'iffy'. It is very much a real law unless and until repealed or overturned. A crappy law, to be sure, but real. And I presume you have evidence that no requests were made of the crappy, secret court we're not allowed to know the happenings of? Or are you making a...

    Christian Persecution vs Persecuted Christians

I noticed you tried to slip this in by skipping a key step in the 'how we got here' discussion. You said the American killed by a drone didn't get due process, and thus it was 'murder'. However, he did get due process, it was just due process from a combination of crappy laws. Continuing to use...

    Christian Persecution vs Persecuted Christians

You seem to be conflating the idea that people can object to how a state is run (Iran, North Korea) with whether or not it is a legitimate state to begin with.

    Christian Persecution vs Persecuted Christians

Yeah... no. You don't get to assert something as true and challenge others to prove you wrong. You have to prove the assertion is true. I never said conquest wasn't an accepted method to gain or expand a state. But the conquest isn't considered complete until other states acknowledge that...

    Christian Persecution vs Persecuted Christians

If you don't want to be constantly at war with your neighbors, then yes, outside recognition is very relevant. Such a war ends in one of two situations: 1. Your opponents defeat you, which means you never established yourself as a state 2. Your opponents stop attacking (be it through you...
