    Need ideas for encounters

I am trying to put together a dungeon crawl adventure for my group. I rarely run dungeon crawls because I find them hard to fit into a campaign and retain verisimilitude. I have found a good way to fit the dungeon in, but I am running into some problems with creating encounters for it...

Is it wrong for NPCs to block a 'detect evil' check by a PC?

Don't have a PHB (at least not one that I can find), are halflings listed as "often neutral" in there like they are in the MM? I'm just kind of surprised that halflings would vary more than humans, I guess.

    Noble Core Class

I did not read the comments, so I apologize for repeats. Error - you copied and pasted the aristocrat's skill list but forgot to change aristocrat to noble. Bonus Feat is too broad for that many feats. I'd say limit the feat selection in some way. For instance, you could limit it to feats...

Is the SIZE modifier more trouble than it's worth?

As I said earlier, apply the opposite of the creature's grapple size mod to the initial attempt. Also, remove the Str mod. Halfling Fighter 7 Str 14 (initial +11, maintain +5) Hill Giant (initial +5, maintain +20). So, it's fairly difficult for a giant to catch a halfling and start a grapple...

What pre-3E D&D book are you using most in your 3.X game?

I'm currently running a Ravenloft game, so I am finding good use out of several old Ravenloft products that cover certain things in more depth or breadth than the 3e material. Right now, I am using material from the Evil Eye adventure and updating it for 3e and the current timeline.

Is the SIZE modifier more trouble than it's worth?

Larger things have higher strengths, true. But no matter the strength, a hill giant sitting on you is much more effective than a halfling sitting on you. It's Weight's role in a grapple that is being represented with the size mod. And it is significant.

    Take 10.5

+1 to: Appraise (nice to be that much more sure) Balance (potentially life saving) Bluff, Diplomacy, Disguise, Gather Information, Handle Animal, Intimidate (that's quite the socialite) Climb (potentially life saving) Craft, Profession (earn more money) Hide, Move Silently, Listen, Spot (scout...

Is the SIZE modifier more trouble than it's worth?

For the same reason that an elephant (or just about anything the size of an elephant) cannot jump. The 3rd power to 2nd power ratio on larger creatures is more significant than the increased gait. On smaller creatures, the ratio is not of as much significance, so the shortened gait effects...

Is the SIZE modifier more trouble than it's worth?

Make it equal to space. There are odd creatures with excessive reach. Space is usually equal to reach anyway.

?!?!?!?! Don't take this the wrong way, but I feel I can safely ignore you for the rest of this thread.

Is it wrong for NPCs to block a 'detect evil' check by a PC?

Not necessarily true. The creature may become good (even creatures listed as always have exceptions in the RAW). It may never have an opportunity to commit an evil deed. As a better example of inability to commit evil, think of a neutral child captured, beaten, raped, mutilited and then...

Is it wrong for NPCs to block a 'detect evil' check by a PC?

I'd say society was evil, yes. Not necessarily the individuals in it. But the evil of society was a necessary evil to maintain order. In large societies with enemies and conquerors at every turn, a lawful evil government is way more effective than a chaotic good one.

What DO you DO for... Paladins?

I don't like spellcasting paladins. I prefer for their spellcasting to be replaced with supernatural abilities (like lay on hands). - pokemount is replaced by a normal one - lay on hands increased to (Wis mod + Cha mod) x Level - 4th holy weapon - turns weapon into good +(Cha mod), uses...

Is it wrong for NPCs to block a 'detect evil' check by a PC?

While it's fine if you want to run it that way, that's not how it works in the RAW. A creature whose alignment is listed as Always Evil is born evil. They need not commit any actions at all before their alignment and their detection is evil. Actions are entirely unneccessary, it the capactiy...

Which would imply that almost all military personnel would be evil. Try getting society to back up your campaign of smiting evil after you tell them that anyone in military service is to be executed.

Is it wrong for NPCs to block a 'detect evil' check by a PC?

A paladin would be enforcing eccumenical justice, which does not have jurisdiction over most crime. It is generally limited to crimes against or by the clergy, and those directly relating to religion such as heresy and blasphemy. In a campaign actually designed for a Medieval feel, that...

Is it wrong for NPCs to block a 'detect evil' check by a PC?

No, that's something all fascists can get behind. You're talking about pre-crime in the parlance of sci-fi. Killing others who have done no wrong is evil. This is societally accepted. Imprisoning those who have done no wrong is evil. You can't justify it with a detect evil any more than...

Is it wrong for NPCs to block a 'detect evil' check by a PC?

Evil is also hurting and oppressing people. If you beat your child, you are hurting and you are evil. If you are a noble who profits off of the peasantry by creating laws to keep them there, you are oppressing and you are evil. In a medieval style society, child-rearing is acceptably...
