Is it wrong for NPCs to block a 'detect evil' check by a PC?

I think any ruling body that actively roots out evil aligned character can only be considered Lawful Evil. Evil alignment is not indicative of past criminal transgressions or criminal intent. To punish those whose only crime is to have internal urges of malice is itself an act of great evil.

Is it wrong for NPCs to block a 'detect evil' check by a PC?

I think the problem is in assuming that every evil NPC is a megalomaniacal or sadistic fiend. Truth is, it would be fair to assume that 1/3 of the farmers one comes across are evil. So detect evil doesn't really tell you much. If the evil character is masquerading as a cleric of a good deity...

Mearls idea on modifiers in D&D

I've always done this. The modifiers being applied are usually circumstance which means no worries over stacking. It also keeps the players guessing a bit and not whittling the game down to formulae. And as Mike suggested, it speeds up play considerably over trying to get the players to...

    Are gamers really that pathetic?

Or perhaps, option number C: gamers like that are drawn to conventions at much higher rates than people with lives outside gaming.

    question of evil

Dragon alignments are listed as "always good|neutral|evil" so I would say it is inherent in the egg. Doesn't mean there can't be exceptions, but generally this should be the case. I would say they are born evil, but can become good.

XP as Cash for Items and Spells

I suppose that's the case if magic items are sold at a static value every time, but few campaigns I've played in are run like that. Haggling can change things a bit.

How to design 4th edition D&D to limit buffing

I think there should be fewer things in the game that provide buffs (or provide lower buffs) and that all buffs should stack with anything but themselves. Spells would stack with any spell that was not in the same "chain" of spells (introducing another concept). But spells might be worded to...

XP as Cash for Items and Spells

I don't think it should matter either way. Someone can sell XP for gold by way of making magical items. They can buy XP with gold for the creation of magic items by purchasing magical items from others. I don't even have a problem with spending XP past your last level. You do not lose a...

    Gut-feelings and new players

I think it's silly to try to get a player to play a class they don't want to. You don't need a cleric in the party. The one time I've made restriction is when I had a player new to the game who already chose a class and a veteran wanted to play the same class. I told the vet to play something...

    Does blade barrier damage objects?

"Any creature passing through the wall..." - I could see this applying to objects passing through the wall as well (thrown through, for example). "...so that it appears where creatures are..." - The spirit of this is to allow a single blade barrier attack on the target before they get a chance...

don't insult the purpose of a door by locking it

I think you may be confusing gamin as an important element with novelizing the adventure. Not to mention, by that point (Dragons of Spring Dawning), the novels had surpassed the game's story. This was a great turning point in the novels because the adventures began to follow the novels, not...

    Who's your Gandalf now, baby?

One campaign (Planescape), the party gained a Pit Fiend as a patron early on. When they first met him, he was shapechanged into the form of a... I don't remember... who went by the name "Bob". After good work done, "Bob" continued to use the party due to their ill-defined moral standards and...

don't insult the purpose of a door by locking it

This animosity comes from bad players, not kender. If a kender player is "stealing" from their party members they are NOT playing in character. It is not a conscious action in any way. Leave it up to your DM what you handle and what you don't. It's pretty simple. The DM should just...
