Sorry, I met a personal mindset not everyone that played in the 70's and 80's. :) Edit: My group recognizes that the unified mechanics of 3e are much better but playing AD&D for 30 years and playing 3e for less than 10 years we find it difficult to change what we are familiar and comfortable with.

The removal of level limits was my favorite change. Unlike most others posting I prefer THAC0 and am indifferent to unified mechanics, though I understand why most do prefer them. I think that this may be because I grew up playing D&D in the 80’s and it is a mindset.

My first non-D&D game was either Boot Hill or Gamma World. My first non-TSR game was Villains & Vigilantes.

What about Holmes and B/X? :) Though I prefer AD&D or 3.x I enjoy all editions of D&D and would not hesitate to join a game of any edition if invited to play. Feel the love!

I believe the term used with this set was Magenta. :) I would also recommend Labyrinth Lord a clone of B/X (D&D Basic and D&D Expert Sets). Labyrinth Lord also has the Advanced Edition Companion which gives you the feel of AD&D but keeping the simplicity of B/X.

Moldvay/Cook (B/X) 1981. Though I play AD&D or 3e I have always thought that this was (is) the best version of D&D. It feels most like a role-playing game and not just a set of rules.

When I DM I add damage to monsters and subtract damage from players. If asked to keep track of my character's hit points as a player I subtract.

Yes. I don’t believe it will replace our edition of choice (which is AD&D) but I would be willing to give it another shot. I will purchase the new “Red Box” and give it a go. And if my group still doesn’t enjoy playing it at the very least I have a new box set for the collection.
