    Is this what you went through with 3rd Edition?

    Well said. I'm all for a new edition, since I'm not a fan of 3e. Unfortunately, I'm not too thrilled about the direction that 4e is heading.

    Is this what you went through with 3rd Edition?

    We had a 1e campaign going on, with a little 2e thrown in. We switched to 3e when it came out. At first it seemed great, but it lost its luster pretty quick. We ended up going back to 1e after about 6 months of 3e.

    D&D 4E 4E in Car-speak: "No Sale"

    I have a different point of view. To me, first edition is like a classic muscle-car. It might not be all shiny and high-tech, but it's got some serious *style*.

    Joe Commoner, and his BIG AXE!!!

    Typically, chickens are killed by snapping the neck with bare hands. Pigs are killed by slitting the throat with a knife.

    Swordmage-> annoying...

    That's the best thing about the old Rules Cyclopedia - the entire game is in one book.

    Swordmage-> annoying...

    Bards, clerics, druids, paladins, rangers, sorcerers, and wizards all use spells in 3.5. That's seven classes out of eleven. The imbalance isn't quite that bad. The spells chapter is only "wasted" for barbarians, fighters, monks, and rogues. Even then, I say "wasted" because most players who...

    Swordmage-> annoying...

    It makes sense. Generally, only DMs will buy campaign settings if it's pure fluff. Add a new character class or two and you might get players to buy it. There are a lot more players than DMs.

    D&D 4E What can change your opinion about 4E?

    That sounds like my experience. I think the game would benefit greatly from fewer choices in character creation and advancement, eliminating rules that don't come into play often, and returning to the assumption that players *aren't* using minis-and-grid.

    D&D 4E What can change your opinion about 4E?

    In BECMI, there are extensive rules for running kingdoms and questing for immortality.

    4e rules will make some games much harder to run

    The older editions didn't have OA and range-to-target can be estimated by the DM on the fly. Combat in the older editions was a bit more free-form and gave the DM more room to make ad-hoc rulings. Of course, that style of play requires more trust between the DM and the players. For some...

    4e rules will make some games much harder to run

    Yeah, I never used minis for anything other than a visual aid until 3e. Although I like a lot of the 3e changes, the two that I dislike are the emphasis on grid-and-minis combat and the emphasis on character-engineering. I was hoping that 4e would undo those two changes. I think the game...

    Like 1e or BECMI D&D. ;)

    Okay, where do you stand on diagonal movement?

    If I'm DMing: My first preference is no grid at all. If I have to use a grid (for a large or complicated battle), then I'll use hexes or 1-1-1-1. If I'm not DMing: I'll go with whatever the DM wants.

    Diagonal wonkiness scenarios

    Let's not forget that it's also the game that doesn't know the difference in attack speed between a dagger and a greataxe. Maybe the round-based system of timekeeping needs to be tweaked in order to avoid temporal wonkiness?

    Armor & Coins - please, No.

    I see what you're saying. I don't want to get into the simulationist vs. gamist debate, but I will say that D&D has traditionally been a "big tent" game system that supports lots of different styles of play. I hope that, going forward, it stays that way.

    Armor & Coins - please, No.

    I think I may not have stated my point very well. Chain mail won't be ignored by the PCs if they want to equip and field an army. Even if they don't, there's a good reason why NPC soldiers would wear chain instead of plate. There's a niche for chain in the game. It's the low-cost alternative...

    Armor & Coins - please, No.

    In the early editions of D&D, there really was never any reason to wear chain instead of plate. A 1st level fighter or cleric might wear chain simply because they couldn't affort plate. After 2nd level, chain was forgotten about... until the PC wanted an army. The cost of plate made it much...

    D&D 4E I really don't like the new 4E PHB cover

    Both of those covers look a lot like traditional D&D covers, but that's the whole point. Descent and Talisman are boardgames that use their covers to promise potential buyers a D&D-like experience. Both of those boxes are recent releases (Talisman is an old game in a new box) and they've sold...

    Anyone else coming back into the fold because of 4.0?

    I'll certainly give 4e a try. At the very least, I'll be playing it in whatever videogame uses it as its rules basis (NWN3?). Unless the new rules really impress me, though, I'll probably stick to running 1e or BECMI/RC.

    Armor & Coins - please, No.

    The OGL let the D&D genie out of the bottle. No amount of new trademarks will put it back in. WotC seems to be hoping that future generations of players will consider dragonborn, godplate, etc. to be an essential part of D&D- trademarks that WotC will own. I think the reality is that even if...
