    Balancing ELs/CRs for a 2-PC party

A well build level 6 wizard & cleric duo can probably blow through many CR 6 encounters with little more difficulty than a four person party would. If either or both has the chance to summon up some help, or if the cleric is melee-capable, the fighter roles are easily filled. If the cleric has...

    Sniping from the shadows

First, PBS is a prereq for Precise Shot. Also, much of your damage is from SA. You can't SA outside of 30'. Have a backup plan for when they get into your face one move action after you open fire. Potions of Fly, Spider Climb, something.

    Tasha's Hideous Laughter --- Broken?

This also neatly illustrates how smart spell slinging can be quite effective; throw will saves at your beefy fighter types and fort saves at the scrawny wizards. It also shows why any fighter type meant to be a serious threat needs to have Iron Will, a multiclass with something that has strong...

    Does the ranged character stink?

    Excellent advice, although aren't bane arrows (equivalent of +2) 160 GP each? +2 weapon = 8000 GP / 50 shots = 160

    Is there a skill-based Sorcerer?

A bard? CHA based spellcasting, spontaneous casting. Trades spell power (spells known, spells/day, level at which spells are obtained) for greater SP, larger HD, superior saves, and music.

    Sniping from the shadows

First, NEVER, ever take an odd number of fighter levels (unless it is 1). Second, it is rarely a great idea to take more than 2 fighter levels. 4 is the most I'd ever take. For example, the you could replace fighter levels 3, 4, and 5 above with a second level of ranger. This gets you the...

    Sniping from the shadows

How about this? Rogue 2/Ranger 2 Take the rogue level at 1 and 4. You want the first one at 1 to benefit from the extra SP, and the second one at 4 in order to get key skills maxed out again (tumble, disable device come to mind). Feats: 1 - Able Sniper Hu - Crossbow Sniper (PHBII - SA range...

Knight Alternate class feature for dwarves

Hey, thanks for the quick feedback! He's only a F2/K3, so I let him trade out Mounted Combat for the Tunnel Fighting feat and told him we'd cross the bonus feat bridge when we got to it. He's ok with taking Iron Will or Quick Draw, so even I don't allow the "Dwarfy" feats in, it'll work out...

Knight Alternate class feature for dwarves

I've got a player making a Dwarvish Knight (F2/K3) and was having some trouble squaring the mounted aspect of the class with dwarf-iness. The player doesn't seem keen on ever using the Mounted Combat feat and plans on avoiding the mounted bonus feats. I know that dwarves as medium critters can...

Why is there so much hate?

The best part about being a half elf is access to the Half Elf paragon and Human paragon classes. Unfortuanetly, this pretty much rules out spellcaster classes (losing 3 caster levels STINKS). But, its not bad for melee or roguish types. Having +4 to an ability score by level 6 is pretty decent.

Making paladin feat choices is tough!

The mounted combat feats are incredibly useful some of the time. The divine feats are fairly useful all of the time. I prefer the latter as they can be used every day, in nearly every situation. Although I suppose with a backup Potion of Reduce Person and some sort of medium sized critter...

    Overland Travel modifiers

Quick question about overland travel. Normally, a party moves 1 MPH per 10' of movement speed. So, a bunch of unarmored humans cover 3 MPH, thus in an 8 hour day they cover 24 miles. Let's say that they're using a trail in the hills. The DMG table says that cuts daily travel to 3/4 normal...

    Arrowmind Spell & Flanking

Does a ranger who is using the Arrowmind spell flank a foe? For example: R - G - Ally R = Ranger with bow & arrowmind running G = Goblin A = Ally with melee weapon The only problem I see is that the Flanking description states: When making a melee attack, you get a +2 flanking bonus if your...

Is Bardic Knowledge = to a feat ?

There's an alternate class ability that replaces Bardic Lore with the ability to use any skill -- whether you have ranks in it or not -- as if you had ranks equal to 1/2 your class level. I think its called Bardic Knack. It seems somewhat useful to me in that all the knowledge skills...

HELP: Do Damaged flying creatures lose ability to fly?

This rule is from 1st edition. DMG p. 53, "Damage: Any winged creature which sustains damage greater than 50% of its HP will be unable to maintain its flight and must land. Any winged creature which sustains more than 75% damage will not even be able to control its fall, and will plummet to...

Making paladin feat choices is tough!

I'd go for Law Devotion now, and either retrain it later (once CHA is higher) or add a different Divine Feat later. Skip Ride By Attack.

    Good skills with heavy armor?

Quick question... Does anyone know of a BASE class with strong skills (6+ or better would be ideal) and heavy armor proficiency? Thanks!

My cleric, the tank - help maximize him

I would NOT suggest DMM Persistent. 1) The character must be played at 1st level. DMM Persistent doesn't come into its own until level 7. That sucks. 2) 28 point buy = hard to deal with MAD. Nightsticks can mitigate this, but still, for a tanking cleric, INT and CHA are the only dumpable...

    Golden Ice (BoED)

Thanks for the feedback. I nerfed the feat with the following house rules: - Touch of Golden Ice sets the DC equal to 10 + 1/2 CHAR LEVEL + CHA MOD, not to a static 14. Rationale: This actually helps players in that it allows the feat to scale with level. It also makes it less attractive...

    Golden Ice (BoED)

Hello, I'd like a quick bit of help on the Touch of Golden Ice feat from BoED to make sure that I know how to run it properly. Reference p. 35 BoED: "Ravages and afflictions affect only evil creatures..." Pretty straightforward. Animals and such won't be affected. "...despite the immunity...
