Making a Samurai: AC and Armor problem

A fighter can wear hide armor, but you must start with decent DEX and you must pump DEX at every opportunity or your AC will start to fall dangerously behind what it should be. This is likely at the expense of WIS. So, you'll find yourself with something like 16 STR, 16 DEX, and 13 or 14 WIS...

    Versatile Weapons and Power Attack

There's a difference between a Two Handed weapon and a weapon that can be wielded in two hands. The weapons tables clearly indicate which weapons are Two Handed Weapons. Therefore, I'd say, no, you may not treat a Long Sword or other versatile weapon being wielded with two hands as a two...

    Lasting Threat VS Brute Strike

Is there language that specifically prevents the mark from being overridden by another defender? If not, then I don't see why a second defender can't mark the critter which will make the first mark go away. A creature can only be subject to one mark at a time...

    About them rituals

Disagree entirely. RAW: It says you start with a ritual book! Pretty clear! RAI: As we've noted here, getting a free book and a free feat is one of the bennies for being a traditional ritualist (Wizard/Cleric, i.e.). Taking that away levels the playing field even more. Also, Its nice for...

    About them rituals

It ends up being difficult to cast multiple different times of rituals. You end up having to tote around all of the different varieties of components. Its generally better to focus on one or two categories of rituals to simplify your component bookkeeping.

    Appraise items

I wouldn't really require a skill roll except in extraordinary circumstances. The 4E economy is very precisely balanced. If the PCs end up being shorted significant amounts of cash because they suck at appraising/fencing loot, then that is basically the same as only getting 7 or 8 treasure...

    Armor that punishes for CA

Does anyone know of armor that punishes foes that attack you with Combat Advantage? I know the Righteous Armor (AV 48) does this, but I'm looking for something that comes in the flavor of scale mail.

    Combat for only 1 PC

I'd advise giving them one complementary NPC ally, built using the NPC rules. This gives you more wiggle room in the event of unconsciousness, dazed/stunned conditions, or just flat out bad rolls. It also allows you to include an extra monster in the encounters. Defenders can utilize their...

Thirst, suffocation and hunger errata : why ???

It seems to me that the Disease track could work well for thirst and starvation. Perhaps with more than one day between each check on the starvation chart, of course.

    Question from a newb DM

The DMG discusses purchase of magic items on page 155, "the Magic Item Economy." Generally there is a markup of 10-40%. If you want to encourage use of merchants over Enchant Magic Item do-it-yourselfers, then the alternate rule allows for items to sometimes be cheaper.

D&D 4E In 4e combat, is an ooze as tall as a human?

Sure, it could attack vertically -- there's nothing that says it can't. Why would it attack the bat, however? With dumb monsters like slimes and oozes, I usually assume that they have a symbiotic relationship with other monsters in their same encounter and thus usually don't eat them. If they...

    Immediate Interrupts: Rule vs Etiquette?

I agree that telling the player if it will be helpful or not is essential. If you don't, I'd expect to see that power retrained for something more reliable ASAP. Reducing the number of viable power options at a given level isn't a good thing, IMHO.

[Cleric] Bastion of Health vs. Cure Serious Wounds

Do you fight few encounters every day? Do your fellow PCs tend to run out of healing surges before the rest of the group? If so, CSW is a good bet. Otherwise, Bastion of Health FTW -- minor action and encounter renewable. Divine Vigor is great in a part of dwarves, and Holy Lantern is...

    Paragon Magical Item Troubles...

Over the course of the level, they should get all the parcels. So, if you have 10 encounters set up, they might find: Encounter 1: 1 parcel Encounter 2: 0 parcels Encounter 3: 0 parcels Encounter 4: 1 parcel Encounter 5: 2 parcels (perhaps after a tough encounter) Encounter 6: 0 parcels...

    Ability Score Blues

Having at least a 16 and pumping it every time is the minimum to avoid suckage. Sure, you can optimize further, but at a bare minimum the 16 is necessary. Whenever you go below 18, I think you have to justify it. Does the boost to secondary attributes outweigh the bonus to hit? Sometimes...

    Fighters and Goblin Tactics

Agreed on how it works. Although, jusy because oyu CAN shift doesn't mean that you SHOULD shift... How would this work if the fighter readied an attack? Its technically not his turn when the readied action goes off, is it?

Should Arcing Smite do more damage?

And CHA paladins are strongly encouraged to use sword & board, so their weapon die isn't too important to them.

Trouble with Short Rest and Healing Word

I don't see it as cheesy at all. After all, healer's lore is one of the cleric's main class features. Why deny them the use of that? What is better is to design adventures that force interesting choices. The "wandering monster eating your surges" mechanic I describe on page 2 is one such...

Trouble with Short Rest and Healing Word

Which is why instead of Random Encounters, you narrate one, charge everyone a healing surge, and move on. No XP, no loot, no wasted table time.

    Acrobatics

I would certainly allow the rogue to use Acrobatics to move through an opponent's square. Just like a fighter could use Athletics to LEAP over an opponent (if they were good enough or terrain permitted, obviously). This movement would definitely provoke OA as normal and the rogue would get...
