D&D 5E (2014) Reliable Talent. What the what?

Earlier editions of the game, and many other RPG's somehow function without auto-succeed skills. And yes, I could go play those editions or other games, but I quite like 5E. I'm not here to throw out the baby with the bathwater. Non-combat spells use up a resource; a spell slot. Even...

D&D 5E (2014) Reliable Talent. What the what?

I think you and I have very different definitions of what a resource is. ASI's are a bonus. Expertise is a bonus that one applies to skills. Reliable Talent is a class feature; an ability. A bonus. It costs you nothing. What I'm talking about are hit points, spell slots, uses per day, etc.

D&D 5E (2014) Reliable Talent. What the what?

I'm not nerfing anything yet. I'm asking for experiences and opinions and considering options. Sent from my SGH-M919 using EN World mobile app

D&D 5E (2014) Reliable Talent. What the what?

I'm only suggesting a roll for checks that could have consequences for failure. There's nothing about implementing a nat 1 fail that demands a roll for every mundane action. Sent from my SGH-M919 using EN World mobile app

D&D 5E (2014) Reliable Talent. What the what?

I think we've got hung up on my specific example of effortlessly robbing a town. The real point here is how RT affects the game through its potential abuse via any of the skills a given rogue might have proficiency and expertise in. Perception, Persuasion, Acrobatics, etc. Yes, there are...

D&D 5E (2014) Reliable Talent. What the what?

Thanks. I am mainly looking for real play experience with RT to get an idea of how it's affected other people's games, so your input is helpful. Sent from my SGH-M919 using EN World mobile app

D&D 5E (2014) Reliable Talent. What the what?

Just to be clear, I am the op, not Ovinomancer, although he has voiced many of my concerns far more eloquently than I could have. Sent from my SGH-M919 using EN World mobile app

    D&D 5E (2014) Sunbeam and Sculpt Spell

I don't know that it is that straightforward. The very name of the ability implies that you are changing the shape of the spells aoe, and that is further bolstered by the very first line in the description, " Beginning at 2nd level, you can create pockets of relative safety within the effects of...

D&D 5E (2014) Reliable Talent. What the what?

That's a valid point. And honestly, I'm not worried about the loot he might get. It's the story telling aspect that bothers me. There must be some challenge, some drama, some cost, or what's the point? Isn't the whole point of bounded accuracy that even trivial challenges have some small...

D&D 5E (2014) Reliable Talent. What the what?

Resource expenditure is resource expenditure. I'm not asking them to equal out. It just seems like any given ability ought to either have a cost that limits its use, or a chance (even a very small one) to fail. Sent from my SGH-M919 using EN World mobile app

D&D 5E (2014) Reliable Talent. What the what?

They're not fighting dragons every day. There is down time. It's not that he needs to break into houses, it's that he WILL. And that's totally ok. There just needs to be some small element of danger. Otherwise it's just me handing him a list of loot. Sent from my SGH-M919 using EN World mobile app

D&D 5E (2014) Reliable Talent. What the what?

Thanks, this is good advice. If I choose to nerf I'll probably go with a fail on a nat 1, and since he's got Luck it'll probably still never bite him. And I'm still a ways away from nerfing. In addition to advice from here I'm thinking I'll give it a few sessions to see it in play a bit more...

D&D 5E (2014) Reliable Talent. What the what?

Everything you mention, except the cantrip, requires a spell slot. Reliable Talent requires no expenditure of resources. Sent from my SGH-M919 using EN World mobile app

D&D 5E (2014) Reliable Talent. What the what?

Low skill DC's? Let's assume he's got a 20 Dex, so that's +5. He's 11th level, so that's a proficiency bonus of +4. Then he takes expertise in, say, Sleight of Hand, which doubles that prof bonus to +8 for a total of +13. So now he's disarming any trap and picking any lock with a DC 23 or lower...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sunbeam and Sculpt Spell

Yeah, as soon as I decide what my actual ruling is I'll be talking to the player about it. So far I've gone the route of immobile pockets of immunity, but it could totally be taken the other way too. Is there no errata on this? Seems weird.

    D&D 5E (2014) Sunbeam and Sculpt Spell

This hasn't happened yet, but I'd like to get out in front of it. Our evocation wizard will likely be taking Sunbeam at some point and I'm wondering how it will work with his Sculpt Spell ability. The wording of Sculpt Spell is a little wonky anyway, To my mind, it infers that the caster...

D&D 5E (2014) Reliable Talent. What the what?

My players are just on the verge of 12th level, and while I've had plenty of experience DMing earlier editions at high levels, this will be our first foray into the upper levels of 5E. As one might expect, there are a few rules that are taking us by surprise as we see them in actual play for the...

D&D 5E (2014) Another Against the Giants question (spoiler)

The xp/gold split isn't really the issue. Besides, that's kind of a meta thing. The Empyrian is a prisoner of the giants and the PCs are good, so if they run across him they'd definitely free him. It's not like they'd owe him anything. Quite the contrary, actually. I'm mainly worried that he's...
