    D&D 5E (2014) Longswords

If you're in the market of creating magic weapons, either for sale or for commission by a king for his army (or something similar), it makes sense that you'd be doing this for the weapons that are most likely to be usable by your customers. Longswords, shortswords, daggers, axes, and various...

Share Your Thoughts On My Warlock Houserules

Out of curiosity, what problems do Warlocks normally have? I had someone play one and he was incredibly effective (he was a bladelock, no multiclassing) and reliable for both damage and tanking. The player is hardly a min/maxer as well, so I don't think he broke any rules. He did eventually...

    D&D 5E (2014) Longswords

For my setting, longswords are the most "common" magic weapon, followed closely by maces. Characters using rapiers might do well at first, but it's highly unlikely that they'll actually find a magic rapier so the longsword issue kind of takes care of itself.

    D&D 5E (2014) UA Primeval Awareness Hysteria

The core problem with the ability is that it places even more burden on the GM to know information that he may not have access to (possible random encounters), or commit to information that was never a sure thing (second wave of enemies if the first wave turns out too easy). The GM's job is...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is WoTc still pushing AP's when the majority of gamers want something else?

I think they are listening, TBH. The first round of AP's were kind of full-featured leveling experiences that take you from 1-15+ over the course of a singular story. Then they sanctioned something a bit different in the form of OotA, where there was room for expanding on the story and...

    D&D 5E (2014) RoT: Metallic Dragon Council

Honestly, by the time my group got to that point, I think people were just kind of tired of fighting the same dragon cultist enemies, so we mostly skipped over the dragon council. It seemed more like the designers were wrapping up the book to meet a deadline and the intern pipes up with the...

D&D 5E (2014) Balancing custom magic items or weapons

Rough description, but I think I like the theme of it. If I understand it correctly, the intention is for a barbarian (or similar class) to be able to "call down" a lightning axe when they drop and get back up again after raging, like some last stand attempt. I think it's pretty well-balanced...

    D&D 5E (2014) Totally underwhelmed by 5e bladesinger, am I missing something?

I'm sorry, but if a DM ruled that way with invisibility, it's basically rendered useless for the purpose of avoiding getting attacked. Not to mention it simply doesn't make sense. If that's all it does in your mind, the mage was better off just going full defense and saving themselves a spell...

D&D 5E (2014) What official material is considered problematic to the point where it is not balanced and presents a problem?

My problem isn't with a specific rule, but rather the overall design of 5e. On one hand, WotC seems to have tried building a rules system that's more influenced by 1st and 2nd edition, and pulling away from the rules-heavy tactical "gamey" feel of 3-4. But then they design character classes...

    D&D 5E (2014) Totally underwhelmed by 5e bladesinger, am I missing something?

Quote me the rule, because all I see I'm seeing is your personal interpretation of it. I can see a ton ways where the mechanics break down here as well. For example, mage casts invisibility and uses the dash action to run into a different room. By your opinion, it makes sense for someone else...

D&D 5E (2014) Thinking of throwing a girl at one of my players

How does introducing this character into the story actually enhance it? Who controls the character? Is it just an excuse for you to "play" as a PC while being the DM? Do other players have similar levels of attention when it comes to extra story bits? I'd seriously consider just asking the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Totally underwhelmed by 5e bladesinger, am I missing something?

Umm, no. If you are attacking an unseen target (regardless of the person having taken the "hide" action or not), you have disadvantage to hit and can still miss if the target isn't in the location you just targeted. Invisible creatures can still make sound, but the disadvantage to attack them...

D&D 5E (2014) Killing is bad: how to establish morality

My Tiamat campaign had goblins helping with last battle because I turned a captured goblin from the first few sessions into a warchief. The goblin sappers damn near leveled half the temple (I turned them into an "Earthquake" effect, for the purpose of scoring). It was actually kind of fun...

D&D 5E (2014) Killing is bad: how to establish morality

With 5e, I noticed an interesting shift in player attitudes towards killing or not killing. Older editions penalized you for trying to keep someone alive (usually by making it harder to hit or something), but 5e just lets you choose to do nonlethal damage. What happened is that they'd keep...

D&D 5E (2014) Is the Help action broken?

Most monsters will be happy to kill the familiar if it's "helping" the wizard like that.

    D&D 5E (2014) Life Draining Attacks

For a truly terrifying monster, have it's draining attack deal percent damage (maybe even just a flat percent). Something like 5% health each time, round down, minimum of 1.

    D&D 5E (2014) New Uses for Tools

For my rules, I'd probably handle that as a simple Healer's Kit check, maybe at half the DC of harvesting it (or no check, just one usage). Alchemy is more for pseudo-magical effects, and herbalism is more for "natural potions" based on actual herbs. The healer's kit seems like a perfect fit...

    D&D 5E (2014) Totally underwhelmed by 5e bladesinger, am I missing something?

The ruling seems pretty clear to me. The only potential problem is the way 5e deals with attacking invisible targets (which is effectively what the person would be with your eyes closed). The default rules have the player "guess" where they are attacking, and the GM has them roll (even if the...

    D&D 5E (2014) New Uses for Tools

Your alchemist section reminds me of one I setup a few weeks ago... Basically, alchemy creates potions based on arcane spells, and herbalism creates potions based on healing effects (plus some "unique" examples). Crafting is handled via the normal magic crafting system, although alchemy has a...
