D&D 5E (2014) Is my DM being fair?

My point is, they arent necessarily bad decisions; just poorly-communicated.

D&D 5E (2014) Why is Hoard of the Dragon Queen such a bad adventure?

HotDQ is (in my opinion) the best AP story. It had a great start, with interesting NPC's, and a real epic feel. It just lacks in the mechanical department, so you really have to prep it hard and fill in some blanks (especially the second book) to present the story in a fun way.

D&D 5E (2014) Bouncing heroes and healing tweaks

As written, 5e doesn't really encourage defensive play. You can't heal more damage than the enemy deals, so combat healing is usually a bad idea. And healing a downed character is rarely tactically better than killing an opponent, since at best you're simply trading your action for his. I'm...

D&D 5E (2014) Is my DM being fair?

My experience is that players are a dime a dozen, and it's generally smarter to cater to the DM when possible. Most groups are totally fine with any given DM style, provided they know up front what to expect -- and can plan accordingly. Problems really only arise when there are communication...

D&D 5E (2014) Is my DM being fair?

It's generally a bad idea to remove or alter a feat mid-campaign. That said, I sometimes think that players tend to forget that the DM's job isn't just to make sure everyone else is having fun. They also need to enjoy the game, and there's an awful lot of 5e rules that make that hard to do...

D&D 5E (2014) The Lost Citadel: a new apocalyptic 5E setting from Green Ronin

How does the setting cope with the reality of 5e having a more superhero-style mechanics of gameplay?

Need help with a character concept

Main thing is to be careful about letting the player focus too much on his character at the expense of the others. That seems to happen pretty often when one guy has an overly-dramatic background that straddles a bit on the dark side. 50 bucks says you'll even start seeing some Final Fantasy...

D&D 5E (2014) Is WotC ever going to release something high level? Even as UA test material?

No suggestions other than to reiterate the fact that writing high-level adventures (T4, specifically) is kind of hard to do because of the way WotC designed the CR system, and the way magic (or the lack of it) can not only change the challenge by also bypass it entirely. Like, an Ancient Red...

Ideal group size, is two PCs enough?

With SW, specifically, I've found a few things worth noting when playing with 2 other people: 1. It's harder for the player's to run overly-specialized characters in the beginning. They don't have to be jack-of-all-trades people, but they don't want to be depending on the wild die and bennies...

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a better Cleric

Bless is generally your best buff. It doesn't have to come from the Cleric, but there's not really anything better pound-for-pound. Also, 1d4 is actually better because of bounded accuracy. It's a +5-20% chance to hit, and makes things like GWM and SS even less risky. Saving throws are...

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a better Cleric

My main complaint about 5e Clerics is how so many of them get heavy armor proficiency. Not exactly sure why that bothers me, but it seems to trivialize something about the class. My second complaint is more tied to Concentration limits, but clerics really don't have a lot of interesting ways...

D&D 5E (2014) XP is a major weapon in the DM arsenal

Conditional XP gains were easier for me to do back in the 2e era, because encounters didn't have any semblance of balancing mechanics. With 3e+, I find that it's a real pain to prep encounters when I won't know what level they'll be until the week before. Not impossible, but still annoying...

Just a pic of my latest product.

They look nice, but are they practical for gameplay? Maybe my group is just really lazy but they'd be knocking those things over like Jenga blocks every time they moved their character...

    D&D 5E (2014) I gave up--Here's a Warrior-Mage base class

Why would you ever choose to play a Wizard over this class? You're not really sacrificing much of anything, and yet you're gaining a ton of martial ability... I'm not even sure I'd choose a Fighter over this class, unless the concept I had in mind *really* needed more than 3 feats to work...

    D&D 5E (2014) Int 8, Wis 8, Cha 18 Sorcerer

He doesn't even have to be likable. It just means he's influential or intense in some way. Like, he walks in a room and people are affected by him. That could be anything from Walking Dead's Negan showing up and just commandeering the conversation and pushing everyone past the point of...

Just had an awful AL con weekend

Sometimes I wish more people would walk away from bad experiences like this with motivation to start DMing rather than simply complain. I've known plenty of DM's who burn out at Con time because it's a generally crappy experience. Last minute assignments, hit-or-miss group chemistry, noise...

    Is Tabletop Gaming D&D's "Sideshow"?

D&D doesn't have a solid "brand." It's a rules system that's attributed to a lot of different settings and games, but there's very little brand value for it in multimedia. There *could* be, but that would require WotC to actually embrace digital trends for once rather than trying to shoehorn...

    D&D 5E (2014) Swimming in Armor

I just grant a flat disadvantage to swim checks when wearing medium or heavy armor. Still makes it doable if the person is proficient in athletics, but still pretty iffy if the DC is 15+.

The New D&D Adventure Is - Tomb of Annihilation!

Still nothing for other settings? I'm getting really tired of the ironically named Forgotten Realms.
