    D&D 5E (2014) Tyranny of Dragons Question

First of all, the Well of Dragons isn't exactly the kind of place you go "check out." It's remote and poses obvious dangers even in the best of times. Secondly, although the Cult of the Dragon is known, the stuff it's doing (large scale raids) is totally outside of it's normal capacity or even...

D&D 5E (2014) Musical instrument tool proficiency and performance skill proficiency

I guess I should clarify that tool proficiencies don't have a *default* ability that they are tied to, which means potentially less control on the player's part. For some reason, I've never had it come up with performance, but I do have it come up with lockpicking once in a while.

D&D 5E (2014) Do magic missiles automatically hit

If a group of 11 wizards decides that having everyone cast magic missile is the smart move, then they kind of suck at being wizards.

D&D 5E (2014) Newbie question re: surprise, initiative and ready action

The "free action before combat" thing is a common desire from players, but it doesn't exist in 5e. They can declare their intent to do something all they want, but initiative is required to know when it all happens. I think the problem is that players look at their "free action" as the thing...

    D&D 5E (2014) Removing the bonus action - analysis

It wouldn't be nearly as crazy as it first sounds, but I think a lot of people are tied to the concept simply because it's been around in one way or another for so long.

    D&D 5E (2014) Tyranny of Dragons Question

The Well of Dragons is not a secret location or anything; it's just the kind of place that people avoid, and I think most sages that are at all versed in draconic lore understand that dragons go there to die for some reason. It's also no real secret that the Cult of the Dragon is a thing. They...

D&D 5E (2014) So How Long Will 5E Last For?

I'm not sure how feasible that would be, though. D&D isn't software that gets patched with new rules (it *could* be if WotC stopped being idiots and started releasing PDF's...), which means revisions would eventually have to require new book purchases. And between those points, you have...

D&D 5E (2014) Musical instrument tool proficiency and performance skill proficiency

I don't believe tool proficiencies generally benefit from ability score bonuses, whereas a skill does.

    D&D 5E (2014) Cost of make a Saving Throw

A real easy solution would be to make DEX Saves use a reaction, and perhaps give classes that have the "evasion" style features get a free DEX Save each round. Considering just how over-represented the DEX stat is in the first place, I really don't think this would cause any balance issues.

D&D 5E (2014) 5e actions economy VS other editions and systems

Not for stuff before 3e. You didn't actually have a "move" action. Movement was simply something that was implied as part of your action. So like, if you wanted charge into the lead orc, you didn't have to move first, then attack. You just attacked (assuming the distance wasn't greater than...

    Describing Non-Physical Hitpoint Loss?

It's mutually exclusive unless you want it to be otherwise. For me, I use whatever description has the most cinematic flair to it. If someone hits you and does damage, there's nothing stopping you from describing the attack as one that found a weak spot in the armor, slashing you in the...

Actions in starship combat for those with no useful skills

I also encourage any RPG group that is running with their own ship to seriously consider the crew dynamics that would be taken into consideration by the captain. Simply put, everyone on a ship (sci-fi or otherwise) has a role to play, or else they are cargo or paying for transport. You don't...

Actions in starship combat for those with no useful skills

Just because they aren't skilled at something does mean they can't try it. Go man the guns and start blasting at things. Maybe it will encourage the player to throw a few points into the skill next time they get the chance. The bigger issue would be if the encounter is setup so that there is...

    Do you have an FLGS?

I technically have access to one in the Anchorage area, but the reality seems to be that it's more focused on CCG's. 5E games were shoehorned into some weird Thursday afternoon timeslot that is probably only useful to high school kids. I would give anything for the hobby store monopoly up here...

    Describing Non-Physical Hitpoint Loss?

I run the game with certain assumptions, but the main one is that during combat you are constantly look for openings to exploit, even if the game mechanics say you're only making a single attack. The stuff that actually gets rolled for simply represent the most important attacks your character...

Dragonlance Pitch Dragonlance to new players

Yes, but then you start going against the stuff that most people love about Dragonlance. People don't generally associate time travel with the setting, even though it's a common plot point within the side books (and post-WotL books). Anyway, I didn't say you couldn't use the setting or that it...

D&D 5E (2014) Any good 3rd party supplements that fill the elemental spell gaps for dragon sorcerers?

Easy answer would be to let them take non-fire versions of existing fire spells (simple element swap). Just make sure to treat the different types as different spells (so knowing fireball doesn't let you cast iceball, etc.). Better answer would be to adjust those newly-added spells a bit to...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls “…it’s now obvious how to live without Bonus Actions”' And 6th Edition When Players Ask

What do bonus actions actually do to enhance the game? I see most people here seem to like them, but I don't really understand what problem they solve.

Dragonlance Pitch Dragonlance to new players

Dragonlance is an amazing setting that doesn't translate too well into an actual game. In a way, that's ironic because the original books came from early game sessions. Anyway, the first thing you have to clear up is what era you're playing in, and recognize that the most popular era (War of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

Not sure how many people *hate* FR, but it does come off as kind of bland compared to other settings. It tries (and succeeds) to be everything to everyone, and ends up feeling like a fast food meal. I've never actually had anyone say they didn't want to play in FR, specifically. But I've also...
