Between Diehards and Casuals is...the Fringe

I would probably be in that fringe category. I do play, have active group, but our session cancellation rate is over 50%, we don't play from July to mid September or during winter school brake. Beside me writing here and one other friend watching some ttrpg yt channels occasionally, we don't...

    What's Your Price Limit?

For real game use, i buy only digital. Dead wood, i treat like art books or comic books. If they are good quality and i like them, i'll drop 40-50e on the spot without blinkig. It's my 1 round rule aka anything i really like and wont that's in the price range of 1 round of drinks in my...

    Running multiple games in parallel?

Did it back in the younger days. 2 groups, two systems, zero overlap. One was VtM, other was 7th sea. VtM was role play heavy, with politics, plots within plots, every character working with and against other characters. It was blast. Best thing about it was very flexible scheduling. Since they...

D&D General 70% Of Games End At Lvl 7?

To be fair, over the years, i did play and ran decent amount of games in mid to high teen levels, all the way to the 20 (and few that went over 20). But, those games would start at levels 8-10 usually, sometimes even higher. There just aren't that many published adventures that start at mid to...

D&D General 70% Of Games End At Lvl 7?

Wow. Out of curiosity, are they in person or online? Weekly, bi weekly, monthly? Most people have trouble managing schedules with even one or two groups. Now, related to going from 1-20. It takes time. Leveling after every session is, imho, to fast. You get stuff to fast, don't have time to...

D&D General 70% Of Games End At Lvl 7?

From personal experience, most games i played, that started at lv1, ended around level 7-8. Very few of them reached level ten. I can count on fingers those that ended in mid teen level. None went full 1-20. And that's across various editions over 20 years. Games that started at levels 3-5...

Studio Agate Takes Over 7th Sea From Chaosium

@DEFCON 1 Best thing about brute squads, as opposed to swarms in D&D, is that you see them drop in effectiveness with each brute defeated. While six man brute squad does 6k6 damage, if you drop two of them, next round they do 4k4. 5 flesh wounds=1 less brute, so, as you said, do you try to go...

Studio Agate Takes Over 7th Sea From Chaosium

Some fencing schools were underwhelming. Some where outright brokenly powerful. Magic was interesting and unique. Was it perfectly balanced and playtested? Not really. Was system good for what it advertised? Hell yeah it was. Also, brute squads, henchman and villain combo was interesting. You...

Studio Agate Takes Over 7th Sea From Chaosium

There is more mechanical differences between 1st and 2nd ed 7th sea than 3.x and 4th edition D&D. They share setting and name, but game engine is so different that they might as well be two different games. That's one of the reasons lot's of people who loved 1ed as a system didn't really like 2ed.

Studio Agate Takes Over 7th Sea From Chaosium

I was and still am fan of 7th sea 1st edition. Own pretty much all the splatbooks. It's my favourite system to run historic games, no magic/low magic swashbuckling fantasy. 2ed changed mechanics too much. Didn't like it, didn't run it, have no intention of ever running it. But i hope they do...

D&D General Wearing a lantern on your belt?

In 2014 DMG, there is minor magic property called Beacon - bonus action, item sheds bright light at 10 ft and dim at another 10ft. Light cantrip does same, except it't 20+20. Easiest solution - common magic item. Miner’s Headlamp Wondrous Item (headgear attachment), common (no attunement...

D&D General Wearing a lantern on your belt?

Yes, it's oil. But what oil? Also, what material is lantern made of? D&D is far from simulation. It's a fricking game. With magic, imaginary exotic materials with all kind of weird properties, with tech levels ranging from early middle ages to industrial revolution, with magitech (artificers...

D&D General Wearing a lantern on your belt?

Nope. First was whale oil then kerosene. Carbide lamps weren't invented yet, they became available after 1895.

D&D General Wearing a lantern on your belt?

Yes. I couldn't care less. Is it Victorian design? Yes. But with so much magic light sources and everyone and their grandma having darkvision, why not. D&D tech isn't medieval anyway. Only exception is if i run no/low fantasy, historical setting.

Games you need to go outside your normal group to play

As it stands now, and for foreseeable future, anything other than 2014 5e is out of question, at least for games that aren't one-two shots. We are in funny situation. While they are willing to try rules light games, they prefer more crunch heavy games for longer campaigns. Catch 22 is that no...

Bob Worldbuilder debunks the Daggerheart license “scandal”

What is so bad in Daggerhearts license? Sure, it's not Creative Commons, but then again, it makes sense to not release it in CC cause of their overall business model.

D&D General What do you say when someone is thinking of quitting your game?

I still think that it can't hurt to ask why. It just might be burnout on d&d. 6 years of 3 games a month is lots of gaming in one specific system and more or less same type of game ( no matter how you spin it, 5e is high powered high fantasy). Sometimes, people just need something different. A...

D&D General What do you say when someone is thinking of quitting your game?

Over last 16 years of playing with this group, almost every one of us had period when he stopped playing for some time. Be it plain burnout or just other life obligations. It happens. From the message, it seems that player still enjoys social aspect of hanging out, just not playing game...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

Personally, i wouldn't want WoTC to touch DS with 11 foot pole. If they left Ravenloft alone, I would be even happier. As a fan, i would much rather see WoTC sell rights to those two IP's to someone else. Preferably someone with enough courage to make proper M or even R rated product (including...
