    Best Third Party Books

Absolute top: Monte Cook's Arcana Unearthed. You can use this in place of the PH and run a game just fine. That's actually my preferred way to use it, while the AU magic system and other changes will work mechanically in a game with standard D&D magic, IMHO the two don't mesh very well. If...

    Modern Conspiracy/Horror idea sources

A pretty good overview, IMHO, is Jim Marrs' Rule by Secrecy. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0060931841/qid=1092980353/sr=8-1/ref=pd_ka_1/102-3907302-1208901?v=glance&s=books&n=507846 It runs the gamut from the basically plausible "rich families have always worked to make sure...

Mutants & Masterminds: Buy revised or original?

As I understand it: - the revised edition has the errata incorporated. That would be this: http://www.mutantsandmasterminds.com/errata/cat_mutants_masterminds.php#000087 - the revised edition has at least one detailed example of character creation. While both of those are nice, I'd probably...

    D20 Modern Supers

Another option is Aberrant d20: http://secure.white-wolf.com/catalog/default.tpl?point=16706 ... which I believe was just recently released. I picked it up yesterday so no playing experience yet, but the rules part looks like a decent set of supers stuff that could be added on to a d20 Modern...

Why are d20 Mecha so slow?

I would imagine it's because they're scaled to D&D-type speeds, which in turn are scaled to a battlemap with 5' squares. On the downside, that makes them unreasonably slow; on the plus side, it means you can do things like have mecha fight dragons with infantry running around, and all use the...

Which superhero system is best for a newbie?

For just a one-off, I'd poke around Google and look for a free set of rules. Or perhaps pick up Hero's Sidekick rules (I believe they're about 10 bucks US) and find some writeups on the web to use as characters. Much as I think M&M and SAS are both pretty cool, they're on the pricy side for a...

to the superhero gamers: what/where is your campaign set

I always set mine in the nearest relatively major city - Toronto for most of my life, Vancouver now. Maps and other reference materials are trivial to find, and I can get stuff at a level of detail far greater than any fictional setting on any topic I might be interested in. It also makes it...

    Latest Nvidia Driver - Anyone?

I imagine they haven't got the proper certificate from Microsoft yet, but will in the near future - if you wanted you could hold off until then. I'm using 61.76 and play City of Heroes without much trouble, so you might try installing that one if you hadn't previously. It's only a week older...

    20 New M&M Weaknesses (10pt/5pt/2pt)

And to repeat, any hero worthy of the name is going to eventually draw such an arch-nemesis just by acting like a hero. The vast majority of 4-colour type comic book heroes have at least one, that implies it's a convention of the genre. So why then would anybody NOT take this "weakness"? It's...

    20 New M&M Weaknesses (10pt/5pt/2pt)

Two comments here - first, a hero who doesn't have an arch-nemesis after his first few outings either isn't doing his job or is fighting well under his weight class, otherwise it's pretty much a comic book convention and as such hard to class as a disadvantage. That leads into the second one -...

Why should I care about the FLGS?

Every worthwhile FLGS I know of competes on more than just price. They compete on convenience, customer service, and by providing services to the community (such as gaming tables, demos, free advertising for gaming groups, etc.), all of which have associated overhead costs that an online...

    Renaming Real-World Nations...

Dangerous Journeys, a short-lived RPG by Gary Gygax, was set on a fairly close analog to earth. It had alternate names for all sorts of real-world nations and/or regions; if you poke around on the web you might find a list. Otherwise, some stabs of my own: -Spain Perhaps "Iberia". -France...

New Feast for Crows chapter & update

I believe (but don't have a cite to back it up) that the whole series was done in outline form before Game of Thrones was published, and it was to be two trilogies. One of the things that's apparently delayed "A Feast for Crows" is that it wasn't originally supposed to be a book - just a...

Looking for opinions on a few d20 sourcebooks I have in the works..

Kind of. It's actually a genre in which martial arts training can grant what are essentially superpowers. It also involves heroes who are good guys, but usually outside the law or any kind of societal structure. An overview: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wuxia In the western world, it's...

New Feast for Crows chapter & update

No idea of the time between each book, but I believe Game of Thrones was published in 1997 or thereabouts. So it's looking like at least a 10 year series for all seven books, assuming Martin doesn't go all Jordan on us.

City of Heroes Roll Call! (Updated September 18)

My playtimes are probably inconvenient for many, since I'm on the left coast, but for anyone who's interested: I just created a level 2 mind/force field controller named Mindsweeper on the Infinity server (which is leading the poll in the other thread as I write this). I went through the...

City of Heroes Roll Call! (Updated September 18)

Best place to check is probably the official boards (http://boards.cityofheroes.com) - they have boards for each server, so browsing messages might help you find one. Failing that, the busiest servers seem to be Justice, Pinnacle, and Virtue.

    Some specific power questions

Most, I would say - any time you want two actual weapons that can be independently neutralized, the extra route won't give the proper feel. It does work well for something like Iron Man firing two repulsors, though, I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for the suggestion!

City of Heroes Roll Call! (Updated September 18)

My alts change too often for me to keep them updated, so I'll just post my main: Ugly Jim Studly, Virtue server, level 22 invulnerability/super strength tanker

    City of Heroes

Actually, that can have an effect on strategy. Many missions don't require you to take out all the bad guys to complete, so if you're short on time sneaking around and just doing what you need to do is a viable tactic. As well, there's a line of sight component to the aggro code - if you attack...
