What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

I believe the vast majority of us were about 13, give or take 5 years. ~Q~

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

I found this comment curious. Why the need to have depictions match across editions? You say it like that's an assumed plus. I've never heard anyone put that out as a positive (or, for that matter, negative) factor before. ~Qualidar~

What RPG product(s) of 2007 are you looking forward to?

City of Brass, which seems to have an unexpected built-in following already. :) If they ever release it, that is. I'm sure plenty of other must-haves will pop up as well. ~Qualidar~

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

This attitude is what I take issue with. TSR didn't drop "us" 1Eers. I was a "1Eer", and with the exception of 2-3 gamers I can think of, so is everyone else I've ever played with. When 2E came out I, and everyone I knew, became a 2Eer. Later, when 3E came out I, and everyone I know, became a...

    What module are you running?

I'm running Shackled City for my ENWorld group (they're up to the Demonscar Legacy), and I'm also running it with my weekly group to buy me time while I rewrite the Desert of Desolation series for their Freeport characters (they're up to Flood Season in SC). I am modifying the Shackled City...

    You make me laugh. :)

How many forums do you follow?

In order of decreasing frequency: 1) ENWorld 2) Paizo 3) Cirvus Maximvus (since about, last week or so) 4) Atomic Think Tank 5) RPG.net I'm mostly a lurker on all of them, however. ~Qualidar~

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

Well, I'm a graphic designer / art director, and I admit that you've sold me on the fact that the 3rd edition art is conveying a message, and I can see where you are coming from with what that message conveys. But all of that is superfluous to the actual original question: what gives 1e art the...

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

Holy crap, I never made the Willingham = Fables connection before. Are we sure it's the same guy? If so: that's awesome. I'm an artist, and so were my 2 best friends / D&D palls back in high school. We all had our favorites, but without fail the one thing we agreed on was that Erol Otis sucked...

    Commuting to a game

My closest game is with my ENWorld gamers, which is at my place. My weekly game with the High School friends is a 1 1/2 hour drive to (traffic) and a 35 minute ride from (speeding). I've also recently started playing a couple of times a month with a different group that's about a 2 hour/1 hour...

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

Yes, that is a good point. Edit: But that's a point about the art direction, rather than the actual art itself. ~Qualidar~

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

I guess my point is that your (talking to Raven here) issue seems not to be that the message isn't getting across, it's that you don't like the message. That's not really an issue with the artwork, but one of your own preference with the playstyle it's pimping. ~Qualidar~

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

You do realize that the "Special Snowflake Style" (even though it's not to my tastes) is a perfectly valid way to play the game, right? ~Qualidar~

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

There was a scientist on NPR last week explaining that the reason people are so strongly attracted to the music of their youth is because the brain is actually still forming. The neuron pathways (or whatever - I'm just an artist) continue to form until your early 20's, and the feeling of wonder...

    Artifacts of St. Cuthbert

I have it on good authority that Cuthburt's mace is in a museum in London. (Wow, did I date myself with that one, or what!) ~Qualidar~

What is the best issue of Dungeon in recent memory?

My vote's Issue #133: Chimes at Midnight (By Nicolas Logue), Ill-Made Graves (Kevin Carter), and Kings of the Rift (Greg A. Vaughan). All awesome adventures. ~Qualidar~

How many of you actually use the term "buff" in game?

I do with the group of gamers I met through here. I don't with the group of gamers that has never been here. -Qualidar~

A Party of Familiars, Companions, and special Mounts

KahunaBurger's run her "Missing Masters" game at several ENworld Boston (/Attleborro) gamedays, and it was exactly what you describe. Considering you're from Boston, your timing is really off! :(

    Vampire!!

Or, at least that's what I thought: What a great hook for a vampire adventure. 1,600-year-old Roman coffin unearthed in London Unfortunately, judging by the state of the body, someone got to him first. ~Qulaidar~
