Right, and in this version you can summon the critter 25 feet away, it lasts for 5 minutes, and you have total control (so it can do anything you can think of, within its capabilities). I guess I just don't see the lack of non-combat utility. :)

Wouldn't a Tiny creature have 0 Reach and draw OAs for entering an enemy's space anyway? What kind of rules could they write to make you use it creatively? Wouldn't that be better left for the player to ... create? :)

Right, the only "hard rule" affect an item's level has is that you must be that level or higher to create one yourself.

4E characterization is much less dependent on your build and more on what you do. Also, there are less ways to truly "gimp" a character by making an incorrect choice. Play is less swingy, in my mind. 3.5 has an enormous variety of options, but many of them are stinky, and serve more as a trap...

My group always rolls damage with the attack to speed up play. When we had a Ranger (before he was croaked) he would roll his two d20s with a damage die for each ... and then keep the damage die for the higher d20 and apply it to both targets.
