    Excerpt: Multiclassing (merged)

Glad I could help out. I'd suggest there may be feats to help out with those weapon/armor restrictions as well, but I'm veering pretty far into simple conjecture at this point .... :)

    Excerpt: Multiclassing (merged)

But said Fighter would also be Trained in Thievery and Sneak Attack 1/encounter, assuming he only spent the two feats required to gain his Tumble ability. A Fighter that tumbles into the thick of melee and stabs someone in the kidney (or liver, spleen, you pick the organ) sounds pretty Rogue-ish...

    Raising/Training an Owlbear Cub

What a bummer. I thought training the little guy would be interesting. I'll see what I can convince my DM to go with, since I don't really see this as a mechanical advantage, but more of a fluff piece ... As for what to do with him, I'd probably use him like a guard dog I suppose. He can't help...

    Death and -10 HP?

I believe 4E's system was closest to always being knocked to -6, but I don't have the time right now to re-crunch out all the numbers to confirm that. It was definitely about there though. Hope that helps.

    Raising/Training an Owlbear Cub

Recently my character has come into the possession of an owlbear cub, who I hope to be able to raise using the Handle Animal skill. I've looked over d20srd.org, but am slightly confused. It seems it is a DC 25 Handle Animal check to rear the lil' cub but I can't figure out how long it will...

D&D 4E New 4e Info! GAMA Tradeshow Scoop

I think most people are assuming that the class defining feature (ie, the choice all classes seem to get now at 1st, like a Warlock's Pacts, or a Rogues ability to focus on Str or Cha abilities) of Clerics will be to focus on melee attacks or ranged holy words. The power you are referencing is a...

D&D 4E New 4e Info! GAMA Tradeshow Scoop

Aye, but you get three Minors a round, if you chose to convert your Standard and Move actions to Minors. Think of casting a Touch Attack spell ... it is a Standard action that CAN be combined with an attack ... ie, the touch itself is included in the Somatic components of the spell. If it...

D&D 4E New 4e Info! GAMA Tradeshow Scoop

For those who wish to split the Divine "attack + buff" abilities apart, I'd suggest making the Buff portion a standard action that CAN be combined with an attack (but does not have to be). Even if they do not wish to attack something, however, they should still be required to make some sort of...

    D&D 4E 4E Liker - anything you worry about?

Tiefling and Dragonborn, sure (although Tiefling at least, DO exist in 3E FR, albeit in a somewhat different form) but Eladrin are essentially one of FR's subraces (Moon? Gold? Grey, maybe? I was never good with the Elves ...) They're already in! ;)

    Excerpt: powers (merged)

I was under the impression that all abilities and spells in 3E also instantly alerted their target. Something like "when you make a Saving Throw, you know WHY you made it". Is that wrong? Also, doesn't Dispel Magic dispel summons in 3E as well? Overall, the preview was good, but mostly stuff...

    Excerpt: The Warlord

Hrm. Been a long time since I thought about pre3E. From what I can remember, the classes in the initial 2E PHB (the edition I started in) were grouped together into rough groups, that could almost be seen as analagous to the roles we will have in 4E. 2E's PHB had ... Fighter, Ranger, Paladin...

Healing Surges innate Blessed band aids

Checking the d20 srd, it appears that non-lethal can never kill you. If you're beating someone with your fists, though, you can always take a -4 to hit to deal lethal damage (I think!). Environmental affects that only cause nonlethal damage can't kill you, though, ever! So, it looks like in 3E...

D&D 4E What was Paizo thinking? 3.75 the 4E clone?

My impression of the alpha, like a few others in this thread, is that is really isn't very compatible at all. Hopefully this gets sorted out in design, but looking at the suggestions already pouring in on their boards, I think Pathfinder is only going to diverge more as time passes. I wonder...

    My take.

So that is an example of how things went in 3E. Lets look forward to 4E. Now, the Rogue is still much better at Use Rope than the Wizard (his combination of a higher Dex, and having it Trained, means he "uses rope" 10+ levels better than his Wizardly friend.) His Wizard friend, being a smart...

    Ampersand: Sneak Attack

I think a pretty good analogue here is the 3.5 Monk and his Stunning Fist ability. Its a completely non-magical ability (works in anti-magic fields!) but he only can do it X/day. If you can accept that, whats the problem with Rogues and their per-encounter/per-day abilities?

    Even more Mike Mearls

Because its an explicit special power of said monster, and not a standard affect you'll see every time a character takes damage? Really though, I think this goes to the idea of some rules and abilities being ok for monsters, but completely borking the game as a PC ability. DR is ok in small...

    Even more Mike Mearls

While I understand your point, I also don't use Sunder in my games (or at least very, VERY rarely). And I'd rather something I'm going to use more often take its space in the book, space which sells at a pretty high premium. Why bother wasting it on rules most people are going to end up ignoring...

Why we have Golden Wyvern Adepts.

 To be honest ... I find your idea MUCH more confusing than the previous suggestion by Cadfan. In fact, your idea presumes organizations named "Golden Wyvern" and "Emeral Frost" ... I thought that was what you were trying to get away from?

Why we have Golden Wyvern Adepts.

Cadfan, I feel like you're reading my mind! I've been thinking the same thing for a while now ... I'd have even posted it but I thought I had read the idea here first! :p Count me in the camp of not caring about the name, particularly if this is the reason behind it. Likely all the other...

    Wizards, Naruto, and Game Balance

The vast majority of my players use classes like Warmage and Favored Soul (and one guy who is a Warmage/Favored Soul/Mystic Theurge) to avoid having to select spells at the start of the day. I'd say they could handle most fighters semi-easily, assuming they weren't ambushed. And when ambush is...
