I wouldnt call at 25% hit points in the middle of a fight necessarily quite good condition. And, based on the fact that you were able to recover on your own and come conscious means it wasnt that serious of a wound. You cant know the seriousness of the wound until all factors...

Except it is not a new approach. It is precisely the approach Gary Gygax (may he RIP) took in the 1e DMG. I think John Snow mentioned elsewhere it was around page 82 or so. It may be that a lot of people weren't playing it this way in 3e doesn't mean that it wasn't that way.

I think it really boils down to how much realism does each of us need. Each of us has to answer these questions and many others for ourselves. While I may have some issues with some things in 4e. Healing surges and 10th level rings aren't among them.

I only used that last phrase because a lot of posters, including I think the OP keep pointing to somethign that breaks their suspension of disbelief. And it has made me think about it and wonder that since others of us dont seem to have this suspension of disbelief then it must be a transient...
