Need help! Creating a spare character: Axe Fighter theme

I'd actually go for the anthropromorphic african elephant over the baleen whale myself (if you can get your DM to ok it). Don't have my books handy, but if I recall, he comes out as ECL 5, is large, and has a pretty heft strength bonus (I want to say it was something like +12 or +14). No...

    Save or die

You know the interesting thing here is the frequency which players hit save or die versus the frequency monsters have to do so. I'd actually hazard a guess that save or die actually helps the players more often than it hurts them.

    Can you charge diagonally?

Yes you can charge diagonally. The easiest way to tell if you clip anything along the way is to trace a path from each of the corners, start to finish. It also makes who gets AoOs along the way a bit more obvious. And other PCs being in the way do prevent a charge too.

    Help! -- Cleric stuff

Well, I don't actually play Eberron (nor do I own any of the books), but I do play clerics, so I will offer my advice with that caveat. My personal thought on something different: try finding a deity which grants two of the elemental domains - fire plus either earth or air. The fire domain list...

Do enhancement bonuses to ability count against ability damage?

I'm late to this discussion as well, but here goes: 1. Normally, the only time you die from ability damage is when your CON is reduced to 0. Reducing the others to 0 does bad things, but doesn't kill you. 2. I've always played ability damage as just that - damage, and treated modifiers to the...

    Character Creation Post Game

Kathak learned the merits of beating a hasty retreat when he got the previously mentioned Gorthak Bonecrusher off on a technicality. Having had to run away at top speed before a mob of enraged gnomes, Kathak learned the value of always having a way of slowing down his pursuers. He always...

    DR stacking

Actually, I have some debate in my mind on that issue still. The specific rule on stacking damage reduction from the SRD reads: "If a creature has damage reduction from more than one source, the two forms of damage reduction do not stack. Instead, the creature gets the benefit of the best...

    Help with spiked chain build

I'd go: Human Fighter S16 D12 C14 I14 W12 Ch10 When using the chain you always want a high strength - there are too many times you need to make opposed STR checks. 12 (or maybe 13) DEX is all a spike chain wielder will ever really need (IMO). Feats Exotic WP (spiked chain) Combat Expertise...

    Clerics?

I'd go the divine feats and extra turning route myself. Check out Divine Metamagic (from Complete Divine). Being able to suddenly Quicken a spell without having to prep it as such is very powerful. Consider your domain selection very carefully. The two domain selections gives a direction to the...

    7th level decision

One other thing you might consider if you are taking a level of cleric is the divine feats. Your turning attempts are all front-loaded for the cleric, so you should have a number of them. If you aren't going to progress any further as a cleric, odds are your turning won't be very effective...

    Chain fighter

I haven't seen the FAQ clarification you're referring to, but from the SRD:

    AC question

I concur that the bonuses don't stack, however there are occasionally reasons why one might wear the bracers of armor in conjunction with regular armor. 1. Bracers of armor (like mage armor) are a force effect, and therefore are effective against incorporeal touch attacks. Their bonus would...

    Chain fighter

I'm going to have to support the half-ogre as well. If you're going to use the spiked chain, a large creature will capitalize on its best benefit (reach) the most. The master of chains is well, kind of weak. I'd look hard at the exotic weapon master. I don't have my books handy, so correct my...

    Divine Metamagic

I'm going to assume that this is a brand-new character (as opposed to an already established one). If you are going to focus on turning, look really hard at the elemental domains instead of the Radiant Servant's sun domain, as extra turning also increases your turn attempts with those as well...

My fighter always gets battered-am I "normal"?

One other thing I wanted to comment on... your equipment value levels do seem a bit low. The group I was with didn't have a lot of trouble here when we played. Just look around - not all treasure and valuable items are golden. Get yourself a portable hole and make sure you take anything and...

My fighter always gets battered-am I "normal"?

This is kind of intriguing to me, as the last character I played was the tank for the exact same campaign. I also played a dwarven fighter (although I opted for the Anointed Knight Prestige Class instead of Dwarven Defender). My sole goal was to be able to soak up hideous amounts of damage and...

Help on Bard Build - It's a matter of pride, folks.

As far as stats, I'd opt for block B and dump the low score into Wisdom. One notion I haven't seen mentioned here is using a reach weapon of some variety. My personal favorite is, of course, the spiked chain. The nice thing about a reach weapon is you get to whack the enemy before they whack...

    Pimp my cleric of Athena

One interesting feat which a support-type cleric can benefit from is the Divine Metamagic feat in Complete Divine (I think that's the name and source). This allows you to pick a metamagic feat you know and be able to spontaneously burn turn attempts to metamagic your normal spells (1 turn...

Summon Undead - looking for good base monsters

Of the creatueres I animated last time I played a necromancer, I think an athach was quite good. I was little lower level than that at the time though. With a 17HD cap, The cloud giant does indeed appear to be a good choice, however... for sheer nastiness and damage output take a good hard look...

    Defeat The Vile 5' Step

I'm going to try to address the original question... which as I see it is: how do you deal with spellcasters/ranged attackers who 5' step away from melee and unload. The two best solutions I've seen from my games are: 1. The spiked chain. This one is really hard to beat, especially when...
