I read Almuric as a kid, when I had no idea how to pronounce Esau. I've got fond memories of that book, as well as Lin Carter's Thongor series. Sadly, Not sure how either of them would hold up today.

I can imagine a lot of players being disappointed that you've ruled out a perfectly good race, IMO, just because if reminds you of a movie you may or may not have liked. Why not play the game "as is" for a few months and then decide? Who knows, Dragonborn may turn out to offer your players...

I recommend "The Drow Wars" by Mongoose. Its three books, each book allowing your players to gain ten levels, so the campaign will end at level 30 for most players. There are also quite a few excellent campaign blogs that will help a new GM.

Juiblex is, by far, my favorite. As a kid, my brother ran me through In Search of the Unknown, the module that allowed DM's to populate some rooms themselves. Being very young and VERY new to the game, my brother populated one room with 6 Juiblexes! That has been a running joke for 30 years now.

I don't know. I just cannot get into the way they've filmed this. It's just way too computer animated. Too fake for me, I guess. It might work for the film, but I doubt I'll spend the money in theaters to find out.
