The Gathering Storm - anyone reading this?

I started it last night. I have to say, I'm no fan of Brandon Sanderson. I couldn't get through Mistborn because of his very poor characters. Aside from his main protagonist, all his characters were pretty much the same. While I've only gotten through most of chapter one, my first instict...

    Books - The Blade Itself

I would recommend holding off on Best Served Cold until you have read the trilogy. There is a lot of carry over and the spoilers could very well ruin the original books for you.

    [September] What are you reading?

While I am enjoying the book, I'm finding it to be not as good as his original series. The characters just seem less entertaining and less interesting. The sex and violence have also been turned up to 11, which may not be a bad thing depending on your taste and tolerance.

    Books - The Blade Itself

They absolutely hold up, and even get better. They are among my favorite books of the last few years. I'm currently reading his new book, Best Served Cold, set in the same world and it, too, is excellent.

    [October] What are you reading?

I just cracked The Electric Church by Jeff Somers. I'm also finishing Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie. Any opinions on the Somers book?

    [September] What are you reading?

Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie. His style is very gripping and I look forward to future publications. In my car I have the first Sookie Stackhouse novel. I started reading it after watching a few episodes of True Blood. It's pretty good as a casual read.

    Best Cthulhu adventures ever?

I really enjoyed playing Masks of Nyarlathotep. Good luck getting past London, however! :)

Who the Hell is Erik Mona?

I got the opportunity to meet Erik at a GenCon a few years back. I found him to be personable and friendly and he seemed to care about my opinion. Although now I can't recall what we talked about, I do recall that he left a very good impression with me. Thanks Erik.

What game system have you tried that made you go WOW!

For me it was Feng Shui. I first played the game with one of the game's creators at a convention in SE Washington and I absolutely fell in love. Great fun and so completely flexible.

Final Wheel of Time book to be published in three volumes

I do not like Sanderson's work. His characters are flat and his world-building is very sub-par in comparison to RJ's. I have little faith that his work will measure up (though if he can cut the braid pulling in half, I'll be happy).

    Smallville:Infamous - SPOILERS

For a show that is usually dumb, but fun, this episode was just wretched. Please, just put Clark in the costume to end it.

March '09: What are you reading?

I'm trying to finish The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. It was going along great, but as soon as the female protagonist was introduced, all the wind went out of the sails. Honestly, with all the praise the book has gotten, I thought it would be better.

    Roles - do they work?

Khairn, If you really think that the only role or function of the wizard, then you are not paying attention in our game. The wizard has been able to "control" the battlefield and channelize enemies in such a way as to make their defeat easier. It seems to me that you are griping just to...

Crafty Games to Publish Mistborn RPG

I'm looking forward to reading your allomancer rules. I worry, however, that you may fall into the same trap as the Wheel of Time and Star Wars adaptions, in that the "magic" systems are so powerful and unbalanced that they make it less fun to play characters who do not use them. I hope you...

Crafty Games to Publish Mistborn RPG

It will be interesting to see the Allomancy rules in action. I'm curious to see how non-Allomancers will fit in the game as well.

DM's perspective: How to deal with the flaming sphere

Does a flaming sphere provoke opportunity attacks or threaten a target? We've been ruling that it does, but that just feels wrong.

Games that didn't survive first contact. . .

I sat down with Raven S. McKraken to discuss "The World of Synnabar" but was laughing so hard within the first half hour that we never actually got to the game. No offense, Raven. :)

September 2008: What are you reading?

A Meeting at Corvallis by SM Stirling. I wish I could craft a campaign as detailed as this one!

    The FalconFar Saga

I keep my distance from any book written by Mr. Greenwood.

    Dark Knight

I thought it was a pretty obvious foreshadow when Lucius Fox (or was it Alfred?) stated that the new batsuit was not great against dogs, but would be great versus a cat. It gave me a chuckle. I also thought we were seeing foreshadowing when Gordon's wife was being told about his death and his...
