Since proofers are reviewing a (would-be) final product, they will be receiving a pdf to be proofed. We ask proofers to include comments in a .doc or .rtf file mentioning page number, column number, paragraph number, etc .

While Biggus' recommendations are sound, I can grab text from nearly any format and work with almost any type of file. (put in four years at Kinko's) However, if you want to really make me happy, .doc files, no fancy formatting, single column would be nifty.
