Amazon listing for the Book of Vile Darkness

Seriously, a Sharktapus would work great in D&D, and would be more appealing to me than the BoVD. It's the "wacky"* stuff like owlbears that makes D&D... well, D&D. There was recently a thread here about must-have monsters for a playtest of a homebrew version of D&D, and the first thing I could...

Rule of Three finally addresses an important epic tier question!

I think it's possible that what I'm seeing may be impacted by the fact that I've only played in a rather narrow level range so far in 4e. My current DS game just jumped from level 13 to level 15 (big dungeon, it made more sense this way, even if I think it was a bit rushed...), from starting at...

    A "Campaign Path"

Each section (not including the lower levels of the keep) should work out to about 4000 XP. With quests, etc. I'd figure that would get the PCs to second level, probably. And if not they can always pick up one of the other threads. My idea was to do something a bit more "sandbox", in that there...

April Dungeon and Dragon (at last) ToC is up

Well, I'm digging the art, at least. IMO you can't go wrong with cliff-dwellings of any sort.

Rule of Three finally addresses an important epic tier question!

Even at heroic I think players could use more time to come to grips with their characters. That's one of the reasons I'm not a huge fan of a 30 level spread. I've been thinking of maybe running something with one and a half times as long between level-ups, but jumping two levels each time. You...

    The Space Pirate's Code

This thread is making me want to run a hack of Poison'd. That game has a "Possibly True Facts About Pirates" section, but also refers you to Under the Black Flag, as Patryn mentioned above.

The vampire starts with just 2 healing surges

Hard fights happen, though. I've seen a fight, second in the day, where two leaders worth of words (so four total), a multiclass word, three potions, and 5 uses of second wind got used. One of the two characters who where down at the end of the fight (no fatalities, fortunately) didn't get her...

Amazon listing for the Book of Vile Darkness

I concur. (And I'm tempted to claim that I won't be happy with any future product that acknowledges the existence of the power books, but even I am not that silly.) Probably because they don't know what the actual (final) sales text will be. So it's technically all wrong, but some of it might...

Rule of Three finally addresses an important epic tier question!

Well, I definitely agree that what XP is in 4e would simply be pacing. But what players I've encountered seem to want it to be is the powerup that it used to be. To me, it's much less obvious than in previous editions. Players are very aware of the mechanics, and they seem to view level X...

Tired of hearing people hate on longer battle times in strategic RPG's

Do you think it could maybe be a difference in experiences or expectations instead? I've played GURPS, and I didn't really find it tactically rewarding, or even what I would describe as "tactical". But you brought up poker, and others have brought up rock-paper-scissors. Poker has tactical...

The vampire starts with just 2 healing surges

I think it could be argued that you're a bit too ready to assume that they're terrible design choices. I mean, you could be right, but at this point it seems to me to be a bit pointless to get this worked up about it. We'll know in a few weeks, but until then we haven't see the whole thing. It's...

The vampire starts with just 2 healing surges

The way this limitation is described I'm not certain if durable would even apply. "Drinking" from the party is a nice trick, I actually hadn't noticed that on my earlier read of the article. The question is: if you drop to zero hit points (or below) and have no surges, then what? Unless they...

Does the Sword Marshall PP AP feature recover BOTH uses of Inspiring Word?

The way it's worded it should qualify, and I think I'd suggest allowing both uses to be recovered, but I think it's a gray area. My thinking is that it could be abusive, but unless I see actual evidence that it is I'd prefer to err in favor of the players, since the monsters are easier to ignore...

Tired of hearing people hate on longer battle times in strategic RPG's

I disagree, in that those mechanically-enabled choices where still choices in 1e, so there's that many less non-mechanical ones to deal with. 4e also groups a lot of what could be meaningful choices in 1e into individual skills, etc., but I don't think that's actually significant since each such...

Can free actions be used as interrupts?

Yeah, I had remembered that as being in the definition of movement - and it kind of is, as each square of movement counts as "movement", but not really since that could mean that the whole action counts, or just that one "step"...

The vampire starts with just 2 healing surges

Except that any other character at zero surges (say because you're fighting surge-draining enemies) is pretty well stuck there. The vampire can stock back up, to some degree at least. Yup. Pretty much exactly what I said. Instead of the leader getting all bugged because you didn't do what she...

Can free actions be used as interrupts?

The thing is, there's a clause in the movement rules that makes each square of movement a separate "thing" that can be reacted to etc. So you can react to any single square of movement.

The vampire starts with just 2 healing surges

I'd think more of the first than the second, as I'd expect surge-draining enemies to worry PCs that don't regen and can't get more surges a bit more... OTOH, the vampire may end up having a reverse "bossy leader" issue, he's going to have to hit before he can get a surge so you can heal him...

Tired of hearing people hate on longer battle times in strategic RPG's

All of the choices, or all of the choices that are specifically codified by the rules to have a specific mechanical effect? The 1e list should be at least as long as the 4e list. (Actually, given a 1 minute combat round it could be ten times as long, but functionally it isn't; it might actually...

A Couple of Questions from a Beginner

One of us... Ooooone of uuuuus... Your attacks probably do not get a bonus. Usually a non-magic implement does nothing, but there are some things that will do things if you have the implement. For your character that would probably only be a feat like versatile expertise. Again, unless he has...
