Question for players: how much reading is okay before a campaign?

The map & one paragraph should be enough to get them playing: I say develop the rest in play. Give yourself some flexibility to really let the players' hands control the gears of the turning age. And don't reinvent the wheel by redefining much of the core game.

Wow, do I hate rolling for stats!

Naw, I like rolling for stats. But, it needs some 3e-type controls so that if your overall modifiers aren't positive or your highest stat is a 13, then you get to re-roll. So, not a true roll 3d6 in order method but not a pure point buy either. I really like the organic method from the DMG...

Question for players: how much reading is okay before a campaign?

Yes, I would read a bunch of pages, but I think most players won't. At least, that's the way it works in my group. So, generally the more concise you can make it the better. One to five pages should be your target. The best success I've had is giving each player a few pages of information...

    Changing Game Systems

Yep, QFT. And, you can try Savage Worlds for free (but you've been warned): http://www.peginc.com/Downloads/SWEX/TD06.pdf Otherwise, I suggest you pick up the new Gamma World. Since you're already familiar with 4e, it would be an easy conversion. I find it very engaging, although I am not a...

A Brief History of Tolkien RPGs

I had a similar experience playtesting a different game once upon a time. It seemed like such a good idea at the time. It wasn't. Anyway, if I ever do anything like a LOTR, I would use Savage Worlds. I've thought of things as simple as playing out a skirmish with a hobbit, a dwarf, an elf...

    What's On Your (Christmas) List?

I know. The irony, right? Even back when our gaming group did celebrate the holidays & birthdays, the gifts were never just right.

Let's say D&D ceases to exist...what do you play?

Savage Worlds would be my go-to game. It practically is already. I just find my D&D minis so darn handy that I can;' give up d20. In fact, the last game I ran was a D&D minis skirmish campaign that had a lot of RPG elements imported. The game we're currently playing is Realms of Cthulhu for...

Favorite Change in any D&D edition

The best change was the d20 system & OGL. That evolution really opened up the game. I especially loved that it allowed other genres. I still do.

"It's how you use it!": Tiny collectors, REPRESENT!

I have a small gaming collection, too; about 1.5 shelves of books & magazines currently. When I got back into gaming in the 90s, I had very little. I was very happy when everything fit into 1 small shelf. But, then I got into 3e and bought a lot of stuff. The paring started when I sold off...

WH40K Roleplaying Games - Preparatory Reading and Advice

I love the Caiphas Cain novels. He is a really different kind of 40K hero - a commissar who is really kind of vain & self-serving inside. The style of writing is just fun to read. And, that is more how I envision 40K (or at least how I would want it to be). Unfortunately, I can't help you...

    Gamma World: Our First Session

In that case, print them with the same backs. Good review by the way. I had fun trying it, and I can't wait for my copy to arrive.

    WWGWD today

Today is (was?) World Wide Gamma World Day. I tried it. Went to my FLGS. Bought the boosters. Made a character - very quick & fun. Drew from my alpha & omega decks - a little less fun for me. And...got effectively eliminated in the first encounter (@ 0 hp when I left after 2 hours)...

What are you doing to keep the hobby alive?

Heck, yes! As for me, I support my FLGS(s) as much as possible. I was at WWGWD today and bought the boosters (and a couple of drinks).

How many RPGs do you play?

A few right now. A lot over the past 30 years. We're currently playing Savage Worlds Realms of Cthulhu. I just finished running a D&D minis skirmish campaign with 3.x and 2e elements added--very fun. I would like to run the new Gamma World; or Omega World, Rifts or a number Savage Worlds...

    Post-Campaign Exhaustion

I can understand the post-game let down. I will be kind of sad when mine finishes this week, and that's only after about 9 sessions. I can't imagine a 5-year game. And that T-shirt does sound awesome. I like to have a journal or something as a souvenir of a game, but I've never gotten the...

    DMs, what´s your preparation-to-enjoyment ratio?

I love the prep work, to a degree. Probably my favorite time is thinking of cool games to run. But, over the years I've learned that my players don't think all the cool games I want to run are all that cool and that there is not enough time for all of it. Actually, there isn't really enough...

    Post-Campaign Exhaustion

It depends on the game for me. The last time I ran D&D, I developed a protocol. My preparation work had to be done the weekend beforehand. The night before, I had to go to bed early. A nap after work (5) & before the game (7:30) really helped. I had to eat a good meal before and remember to...

    What Would a Pirate Do?

In my game last week, the pirate tried to escape. It didn't work.

    Your favorite character advancement scheme

For d&d/d20, I really liked the experience awards in Omega World: 0 for doing nothing; 500 for playing it safe; 2000 for a standard adventuring session; and 5,000 for a spectacular success or failure. I think it was called free form experience. Otherwise, I really like the experience system...

    Derogatory Term for Halflings

"Master" or "Little Master" would be politely pejorative since those are the formal terms for a child. Such a reference would be referring to a halfling as if he were a child.
