    Not D&D

Savage Worlds for me, too. I've run several games in different genres, and all were fun. My prep time is decreased by about 90%, which is critical. It's a blast to pay, too; which is not a coincidence. You can even try it free: http://www.peginc.com/freebies/SWcore/TD06.pdf

Great Authors that AREN'T in Appendix N.

I will suggest Michael Crichton for the book The 13th Warrior (f/k/a Eaters of the Dead); also the film and the classic tale of Beowulf. Homer, The Odyssey. I am now surprised that more classical reading is not included in the original Appendix N.

    Emotional Attachment

It's the return on investment for me. Where I get the most bang for my buck. Also, time & effort are investments; so a game system has to deliver. Most times, it's one that I already have & like. But, new ones sometimes have a lot to offer.

    tell me about Gumshoe games

I can't tell you about Trail of Cthulhu (PC's description of the skills above sounds interesting, though), but I can say that we've had a lot of fun with Realms of Cthulhu for Savage Worlds. Realms of Cthulhu - Reality Blurs Pinnacle Entertainment Group | Savage Worlds It has an option for...

Looking for a new RPG - Recommendations?

Try Savage Worlds for free: Test Drive Savage Worlds: The Wild Hunt | Pinnacle Entertainment Group We really like Savage Worlds. It is fast, furious & fun. There are only 3 of us left in our group, so I think it could work for the 2 of you.

What to play next? Help me solve my D&D(ilemma)

Too bad! But understandable. This is a good suggestion: I also think the new Gamma World would be great for you. It is a simplified 4e. There are adventures in the core game and 2 published modules. It is very plug & play, fire & forget. There are even counters in the boxed set. It...

WotC announces 'Rise of the Underdark' campaign

I can see that. I will check it out and see if there is a way to make it work for me.

Warhammer 40k RPG: Only War, the Imperial Guard RPG.

After not playing the first 3 iterations of 40KRP, I traded them off. I doubt I'll pick up this game either. The most bang for my buck with 40K has come from the Caiphas Cain novels.

WotC announces 'Rise of the Underdark' campaign

These are the same and both refer to a campaign setting book, not an actual adventure or series of adventures constituting a campaign. That's what I think is lacking in this effort. I may still check out this book, but I doubt I'll buy it. It sounds like the typical sort of book that gives...

WotC announces 'Rise of the Underdark' campaign

So, where is the actual campaign? The big module or series of connected adventures?

    'Lack of Heroism'

Something about D&D brings out that style of play. I suggest a new game in a different genre.

Would you quit a game if....

It's never just because my character died. There are usually a lot of other factors: betrayal, disappointment, miscommunication, bitterness, etc.; and then there's the stuff that happens in game. :)

    What to do...

Do what is the most fun for you. I, too, like the sound of the Star Wars game. I think you could make it an episodic game so that you play regardless of who is present on a given date.

Help me find some groomsmen's gifts!

I was going to suggest subscriptions to Knights of the Dinner Table, but those Star Wars medals sound awesome! I find a gift inscribed with just the date of the event to be good, so maybe you could get your wedding date put on them.

Would you quit a game if....

I've had a lot of PCs go out like that. Not all got a proper burial. All had their corpses looted. It just doesn't feel fun or heroic.

Would you quit a game if....

I agree with you both. The game needs the risk of death for the players to feel challenged, I think. But, as a player, I've quit games after my character died because I just couldn't make the new investment to come up with another character. The worst is an ignoble character death caused by...

    Looking for new RPG

Savage Worlds fits the bill for me, and I think it would for you, too. It reduced my prep time about 90%. Now, I can focus on the story and adapting it to the actions of the heroes. I believe it is good for any kind of game, but we've had the best luck with military & modern settings...
