OP, have you looked at Dragonbane? It sounds like it might be a good fit - streamlined rules and back to more reasoned and dangerous power scale. I also could see a market for scaled back 5e that reduces the superhero feel.

I think the key here is that some things like in Call of Cthulhu require players to make connections or draw conclusions that their characters have obtained clues for. We never say at our table that the character wasn’t smart enough (have high enough INT) to solve the mystery. It’s ok to have...

Yeah I’d agree “player/character focus” as a more new school feature. When I think of “player skill,” I think of tournament dungeons that challenge the players at-the-table skills. But at the same time all adventures have some level of challenge, so player skill I think applies to all eras.

I don’t think player skill is exclusive to old school. Challenging players is a feature of all roleplaying eras.

The Players Companion. I think it will be a single new book that brings elements of the older books up to speed with 2024 rules. Those older books may eventually go out of print.
