    Combat vs. Role-playing

Well for the parts where they aren't dead yet... The orcs helemet rings like a bell when yuo striek him but the brute still stands. Chainlinks burst asunder as the orc fights on. The orc shrugs off your feeble blow. Your sword almost slipped from your hand with that blow. to your surprsie...

    Combat vs. Role-playing

20 rounds? How is that goign to happen with 3 orcs and a fighter? Depending on how i felt about it and how dedicated to the fight the orcs are I might let the player get an intimidation roll there or simply have the remaing two orcs flee. now with a whoel bunch of orcs and a whole bunch of...

Why are they making demi-humans taller?

He is not likely have a STR penalty if he is a fighter build. He just is not likely to have as high a STR bonus as a human fighter could, at first level. Sure the halfling may be STR 13 instead of STR 15 so in melee he will be 1d6+1 as opposed to 1d8+2 in damage. He'll be hitting just as often...

    Combat vs. Role-playing

which is more impressive? Scenario A, player is engaged with an orc while two more are advancing. player- I attack with a 17 to hit , oh yeah ...(roll) for 11 points of damage DM- you hit the orc and goes down. player- cool Scenario B, player is engaged with an orc while two more are...

    Combat vs. Role-playing

I ws anwering who and how qucik in the same line, sorry if that was confusing. I'm talking pre-segments here, and everyone could in fact search, there was nothing stopping people from having characters search. Thieves didn't even exsist in the rules until the first supplement. The 10' pole...

    Combat vs. Role-playing

EVERYONE could search. In the good old days turns were 10 minutes long. Taking 20 down the hall is a great way to never finish an adventure. 2 minutes every five feet? A 100' Long 10' wide corridor would take 160 minutes of game time. Not many buff spells woudl last in that sort of...

    Combat vs. Role-playing

Hand to hand combat surpsingly enough has a lot to do with personality. Ones bearing and attitude has a heck of a lot to do with survivng a fight or gaining more then simple victory. Some folks will shrink from the big bold fellow that laughs and struts as he chops away at his foes and other...

    Combat vs. Role-playing

"Back in the day" it took 10 minutes to search a 10' area and every one had a 1 in 6 chance of finding traps and such. Dwarves were pretty good at it if there was stonework involved (not very rare in dungeons). The thief /rogue simply got better at it.

Why are they making demi-humans taller?

STR penalty of -2 isn't much of a barrier. Bows are a huge issue ...how? A PC fighter is still likely to have a positive STR modifier. The move "penalty" isn't a "huge annoyance" , movement rates are clearly spelled out in the rules. In 3.5 weapon size issues are completely covered by the...

AOO's have to go, or be changed

You depended on your buddy to not get killed and based your defense on that, but your buddy got killed and now you aren't properly defending yourself anymore.

    Tiger men races?

Rakshasa are a race of demonc shapechangers, they arent suppsoed to be tiger-men in their normal shape. Gamers being the "imaginitve" folk that are latched onto the excellent picture in the original MM as what they were "supposed" to look like in normal form but this in incorrect.

AOO's have to go, or be changed

Just have a rule saying...sorry can't normally do that (drink potion) in a threatened square. Oh you insist? Make a concentration check. Fail it and can't drink the potion this round, fail it by 5 or more...drop the potion (ruining it).

    Help me capture my party.

I've seen people throw hissy-fits over getting captured instead of killed. player- "aw crud, I've lost all my stuff!!! This character isn't worht playing anymore.." crumple, crumple, crumple ...throw. DM- "uh, he's still alive." player- 'so what, I'm rolling another character..." People...

Ever play Traveller? How many editions of that are there ? 8 , 9 ??? Runequest changed from 2nd to 3rd and the unreleased Runequest Slayers would have been radically different and the current mongoose editon is fairly different. EPT/Tekumel games ...that setting gets a whole new game every...
