Why Shouldn't Martial Characters have powers?

huh? Wizards most certainly need Fighters. 10th level wizards don't get to be 10th level wizards without any fighters hanging about.

Why Shouldn't Martial Characters have powers?

of course D&D solves that proble by having the plain-jane fighter accompnaied by his buddy the rogue, the cleric and the Wizard. The fighter isn't really supposed to be there alone, neither is the wizard. I franky think a fighter has to be an idiot (or a bad roller) not to be able to beat a...

Why Shouldn't Martial Characters have powers?

climb, jump...grapple. Think. don't stand in the open (or a big room) and wait to get fried. Get that wizard chasing you into a 10-15 foot high corridor or a thru a doorway(eventually he will) and them you got him. oh yeah...Bows and arrows, best way to deal with a flyingmage..hi everyone I'm...

    Why Is the Cleric Unfun?

Turn Undead - is prety darned useful and curiosuly underated for an abiltiy that makes a whole type of monster go "poof". Been playing a version of the game where clerics don't get spells at 1st level. That sort of drops the whole "party-band aid" on it's back and kicks it to death. If...

What's the most amazing start to a new campaign you've ever done?

Well I gave every player a reason for the PC being where they were and they just all happened to be in the same Inn whaen it was atatcked by a Horde of Zombies. A BIG horde. they all ended up pursuing their own goals, somewhat together, while they all dealt with the zombie problem. We had a...

    An end to scry-buff-teleport?

They could have been usign another spell that let them scout out the area. "Scrying" allows a save anyay so...the specific situation depends on the target blowing a save. and yes the players let greed win out over experience and good sense. they were in a dungeon called "The Black Pit of the...

    Facing

The facing rules in unearthed arcana do it all fairly well in 2 pages or so. I've seen many hundreds of fights lost because one side came up behind another or snuck up on a flank quickly, darned few ( likley none) where they were surrounded 3.x flanking style.

    An end to scry-buff-teleport?

My players tried "scry-buff-teleport' to raid a dead dragons treasure chamber, on the 40th level of the dungeon we were playing in, they were in the 10-12 level range. They scried...sure enough dead dragon, treasure still there, they buffed ,they telported...they had to deal with a ghost...

Squad leader is a great example of complexity killing the game. It became too complicated for it's own IN group of players.

    C&C Questions

No picky skills, some classes have skills and special abilities but there is no master list of skills. You don't need them. Everyone has a set of PRIMES, which is a focus on an ability score. When you are checking vs a prime score you have a much better chance of success then checking against...

    Facing

Facing please. Some sort of facing rules accuratley reflect how melee combat actually works. You do have a front and a back. Mobs of fighters develop a momentum and move forward not in giant circles. folks that can think in circles sometimes win the battles. Look at historical write-ups of...

    Adapt or Perish!

Yes, some of us are in fact inviting middle schoolers to the table. 1/2 my group is 38+, the other half is sons and other gamers kids aged 11-12. We've been playing BFRPG however and one middle schooler couldn't hack it and doesn't play with us anymore. He couldn't adapt to the samll simple...

    Game complexity...

Read a book my folks gave me recently: "A Theory of Fun for Game Design" by Ralph Koster. The book is an enjoyable look at game theory from a video/computer game designer. There are a number of insights on games in general (regardless of media) and a number of points that apply to RPGs so very...

    Was 3rd edition fundamentaly flawed?

the notion that 1st level MUs go 'splat' real easy and there is a 10 pt difference in BAB at 20th level betwen a fighter and a not-a-fighter class, or saves vs some effects being really bad vs really good at really high levels equals fundementally flawed baffles me. Some characters are good at...

    Was 3rd edition fundamentaly flawed?

It's marketing-speak. Who they are marketing to (or who they think thye are marketing to) may have changed so they may genuinely be working to reach that market with a quality product but it's still marketing-speak.
