most of my games take place in the technological equivlent to the 1400-1500 period. Guns are used but are often to expensive for players, cannons are rather common among the richer nations, and plate armor is still in use.

12th... 3 stat boosts, at least 5 feats, and a fair amount of special abilities (class features and spell levels). In truth most of my campaigns have come to an end around 12-13th level, so in many ways its an unofficial level cap.

Darkness and Dread is a great book, one of my favoret d20 books. It actualy modifies the game for lower magic horror campaigns rather then shoehorning the RAW into it.
