    Evil Campaigns

I was really disappointed with the Book of Vile Darkness, for that very reason. For me, "evil" (however you define that) has to be able to "win" sometimes for the game to be interesting. I have been enjoying the indie "Black Tokyo" game because it doesn't pull any punches whatsoever. In...

    D&D 5E (2014) Are you going to buy 5e?

That's what turned me off to it. For me, chargen is just as important as combat rules. Then again, I'm not a beginner player, so I'm probably not their target audience for that product.

    D&D 5E (2014) Are you going to buy 5e?

Yep, that's pretty much where I'm at, too. I have found that (in my area) it's hard to put together a group of gamers who can show up with any sort of consistency and want to play something other than high fantasy. Pathfinder rules the roost, so I finally ended up buying into that just to be...

Who cares what the designers think?

    D&D 5E (2014) My Hope for D&D 5/N

I have never bought into that approach, either.

    D&D 5E (2014) My Hope for D&D 5/N

You are right - the game does discourage that. I just tweak it so that it is less of an issue, though. My campaigns have significant non-combat encounters, as well, and players can easily gain XP in them with a minimum of fighting, so that helps. Many of the monsters I use are not in the...

    D&D 5E (2014) My Hope for D&D 5/N

My approach has always been to leave out parts of the game that either don't make sense to me or don't enhance play. I started way, way back when D&D first came out, though, and that was officially encouraged by Gygax. I have noticed that a lot of people these days feel the need to stick...

    D&D 5E (2014) My Hope for D&D 5/N

I have always run it that way, in every game, and every edition. Everyone starts at first level.

    D&D 5E (2014) My Hope for D&D 5/N

I have always enjoyed running clerics, or any other healing class. You might not get all the glory, but you are often one of the most valuable members of the party.

    Evil Campaigns

Unfortunately, I have never found a set of players who are comfortable playing evil. Maybe someday...

    D&D 5E (2014) My Hope for D&D 5/N

I have never worried about any of that. I ignore the charts about "appropriate wealth by level" and all that nonsense.

    D&D 5E (2014) My Hope for D&D 5/N

In my campaigns, it's up to the PCs to make smart decisions on their own. Some of the things they encounter may technically be above their level, some below, and some at it. If they encounter something that is "above their level," they can avoid it, or find a way to kill it that doesn't...

    Free RPG Day

To add a little more to this... This is just one more example of the many reasons I don't patronize my area FLGS as much as I used to. I can deal with paying a little more for products for convenience, but it's up to them to provide the convenience part - having things in stock, being open...

So You're Just Not "Feeling It" for 5e - What ARE you excited about?

I always wanted to like GURPS, but it just didn't do it for me. It's not a bad system - it's just not a style I enjoy. I like HERO much more, but Savage Worlds wins out, for me.

    Anyone feeling old?

When I was a child, a very nice administrator at a university near my house had given me an account so I could play games on their mainframe. The terminals didn't have monitors - everything printed out on paper - so I would play games with the computer by having it print each move out on the...

    Anyone feeling old?

I had a coat hanger stuck down inside a broken hollow antenna at one point.

    Anyone feeling old?

Old is remembering standing by the TV to click through the three or four channels until you found something to watch, then having to stand there throughout the show with the antenna in your hand to get good enough reception to watch it.

    FreeRPG Day PDFs?

The three game stores within 15-20 minutes of me didn't participate at all. The closest one that did was 45 minutes away. Spending gas for that drive would defeat the purpose of it being "free." I find it ironic that the three nearest me chose not to participate in something that is...

    Free RPG Day

Unfortunately, none of the gaming stores near me participated this year. The closest one that did is a 45 minute drive away. By the time I spent the gas on that, the RPG wouldn't effectively be "free" anymore.
