Yeah, that's probably why the various damage types are so vestigial in 5e. If you actually considered what being hit by things like thunder or necrotic damage would do to you, it'd be a very different experience.

It certainly is this way now, but I'm not so sure that was the intent in 1e, at least, due to the existence of "Alignment Languages".

Obviously, I no longer have the evidence, but I did once ask Cust Serv about knocking out a minion. Now granted, the WotC Cust Serv department was notorious for sometimes contradictory rulings, so take this with a grain of salt, but my group had a Barbarian with the ability to deal thunder...

It seems that the approach to the game itself is a factor here. If your campaign consists of murdering monsters, invading their homes, and taking their stuff, or "wacky hijinks" or just "exploring a strange and mysterious world", alignment has no real function, and might even get in the way...

I guess I can accept that. I just know that if tomorrow, scientists announced they had empirical proof that there is an afterlife, but to get there, you have to swear off playing Dungeons & Dragons, I'd seriously have to consider the merit of my favorite hobby!

I don't really see how killing minions is much different than a high level AD&D Fighter cutting down a dozen kobolds in one combat round or a Wizard obliterating half a goblin tribe with a Fireball chucked into their warrens. The only thing the minion mechanic does differently than 1 HD or less...
