Official News Level Up Monster Preview: Green Dragon

This is really cool. I might use some of the new abilities even before the book is out to add some extra oomph to existing 5e dragons. A couple of notes: Blood Toxicity triggers on a melee attack, not a hit -- is that intended? It could get cumbersome with three attacks from a PC, all...

Pathfinder 2E Is It Time for PF2 "Essentials"?

Not my experience at all. At this point I’ve played with at least a couple of dozen different players long term on Roll20, and another couple of dozen or so short term, and only a minority of those folks could be described as enthusiasts.

Pathfinder 2E Is It Time for PF2 "Essentials"?

Yes, I'm aware that the more casual crowd will eventually be swayed by the enthusiasts. That's why mentioned the opinion leaders, comprising the enthusiasts of the hobby. But it still is massive hyperbole to say that Roll20 is completely disregarded by the community. It's not. It's still the...

Pathfinder 2E Is It Time for PF2 "Essentials"?

I'm not disagreeing with the uncertainty of drawing conclusions about the Roll20 numbers. For example, my Roll20 PF2 game drew just as much attention as my 5e games did, whereas my 3.5 game and 4e games attracted less. Judging by the Roll20 numbers, I expected to get fewer player applications...

Pathfinder 2E Is It Time for PF2 "Essentials"?

I agree with you that Foundry is the go-to VTT for PF2, backed by the opinion leaders (the enthusiast crowd). That’s absolutely true. But we don’t know how popular it really is compared to Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds, as far as PF2 numbers are concerned. Us enthusiasts often overestimate the...

Pathfinder 2E Is It Time for PF2 "Essentials"?

Oh come on, this is massive hyperbole. The enthusiast crowd online favors Foundry, but that’s the enthusiasts—the minority. We have no way of knowing how many people play PF2 on Roll20 vs Foundry vs Fantasy Grounds. I’m just starting a PF2 game on Roll20, and I received just as many applications...

Pathfinder 2E Discussing a new PF2 healing paradigm

Why not use stamina? It has a built in attrition model in resolve, like 4e healing surges, plus apparently there’s less busywork healing after a fight.

Pathfinder 2E Release Day Second Edition Amazon Sales Rank

I think the reason why Roll20 didn’t give PF2 a strong initial push was 5e. They have a limited amount of resources to convert books into Roll20 modules and compendium additions, and Paizo produces a lot of content. But 5e has a much bigger audience, so 5e Roll20 modules and books are much more...

Pathfinder 2E Is It Time for PF2 "Essentials"?

So from what I’ve gathered, a fairly common criticism of PF2 is that it’s too complex, granular, and cumbersome because of so many moving parts. But had Paizo made PF2 simpler and less complex, wouldn’t it compete with 5e even more directly? Why would you play PF2 if it was even closer to the...

Pathfinder 2E Is It Time for PF2 "Essentials"?

Not a single officially published NPC in 5e uses the PC creation rules. They don’t get feats or ASIs, they don’t get XP, they don’t have inspiration. All built with the “monster” creation rules.

Pathfinder 2E Is It Time for PF2 "Essentials"?

Apparently 5e is also a board game because PCs and NPCs don’t follow the same rules.

    D&D 5E (2014) Skill Challenges in 5e

Sure, but that's not very relevant when discussing the addition of 4e skill challenge rules into 5e. We should probably reference the final version that came out a whole decade ago. The basic structure of the skill challenge can imported without any issues since both editions use an extremely...

    D&D 5E (2014) Skill Challenges in 5e

The skill challenge rules were iterated on in 2009 and 2010, so the DMG1 version was outdated one year into the edition, much like static racial bonuses, some of the monster math, the flying rules, magic item crafting, and so on. WotC was very aggressive in updating the game back then.

    D&D 5E (2014) Skill Challenges in 5e

I see that as poor framing of a challenge. If the challenge is something you can overcome with just, say, convincing a single person, it probably shouldn't even be a skill challenge. Not all skill checks are supposed to be part of a skill challenge, and Rules Compendium has examples of skills in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Skill Challenges in 5e

Definitely, although 2010 is only 2 years after the initial publication of 4e, and DMG2 was even earlier in 2009, so it’s not like the improved and evolved rules were published years later in an obscure online article. The rules were improved very quickly, all things considered.

    D&D 5E (2014) Skill Challenges in 5e

Whenever the 4e skill challenge rules are discussed, there’s often a lot of misremembered stuff tossed around. The rules don’t prescribe a certain order for the checks, for example, or that everyone has to roll. One player once told me that they didn’t like the rules—yet turns out the player had...

D&D 4E Something in the "MoonStalker" Paragon Path that doesn't quite make sense?

The power is worded poorly, that's all. Instead of saying that you turn into the form of a wolf or a tiger, it should simply emphasize and empower the lupine or feline aspects of a shifter's bestial form (since in 4e shifters by default are either wolf or cat-like). So I'd re-word the effect as...

D&D 3.x Thoughts about Arcane Spell Failure

It’s interesting how arcane spell failure from armor has essentially gone full circle. Impossible to cast in armor (sans elven chain) in 2e; percentile failure in 3e; -2 to spell rolls/“DC” (translated to other editions) in non-proficient armor in 4e; and now impossible to cast in 5e—except if...

D&D 5E (2014) So Where my Witches at?

To me the 5e witch is found in the warlock class. Take the archfey, fiend, or celestial patron, and the tome or chain pact. You can get rituals like augury and beast bond; you can get a familiar; you can take thaumaturgy or druidcraft; you get hex and polymorph; you can heal. Basically you can...

    D&D 3.x

If the aim is to treat combat as a failure state and something to avoid, I honestly don’t see the core chassis of 3rd edition suitable for that purpose. 3.5 has a lot of its rules devoted to detailed, grid-based combat. That’s one of its draws, the tactical nature of fights and all the rules...
