    Help Me Understand Fate Core

I realized what it is. It's the convoluted way invoke for effect could sometimes lead the GM to offer a compel in previous versions (like Dresden Files). Since the tag used for the invoke wasn't actually the compel, the invoke for effect was free, but the compel that was caused by the invoke for...

    Help Me Understand Fate Core

I really believe I read that somewhere. But, thinking about it, it might not have been Fate Core (maybe some other Fate system?)... I looked for a rule on what I said, but I can't find one! Without any rule, I'll have to conclude that I was wrong.

Any RPGs that focus on roleplaying instead of combat?

To a degree, this is something that caused some disillusionment with D&D post-2000 for me in the past few years, and what has me interested in the indie scene. I don't want to ruffle anyone's feathers, but I used to be of the mind of constraining the GM to give the players more power. That, to...

    Help Me Understand Fate Core

Okay, so I'm going to start with compels and get back to the sandbox stuff afterward. First, you're looking at complels wrong. They don't tell PCs what they can and cannot do. Compels add complications to a character's life. Saying "You can't talk to Dukat yet" is not a complication. Here's a...

    Help Me Understand Fate Core

This is somewhat incorrect. If you're compelled you get a Fate Point. Period. If its a free invoke, then you do not spend a Fate Point, but all compels give the compelled character a Fate Point.

Any RPGs that focus on roleplaying instead of combat?

I think this sums up what you're saying pretty well. In the end, what happens in the game is a result of, and constrained by, the ideas, imaginations, and experiences of the people playing the game. I think the big reason for social skills have been added to games has been to attempt to curtail...

Any RPGs that focus on roleplaying instead of combat?

The jump example is an interesting one. "Jumping" is a description of the fiction. When you say you're jumping, what you're saying is that in the fiction you're going to attempt to jump. That just happens to also be represented by a very specific skill in D&D 3e that only pertains to the fiction...

Any RPGs that focus on roleplaying instead of combat?

As a point of clarity, are you saying that social skills are different than physical skills mechanically/in-gameplay or philosophically?

    Help Me Understand Fate Core

The most common reason I've seen to invoke an aspect on someone else's character is because you're trying to do something very bad to that character, whether it be an attack, an opposed roll, or creating an advantage. So, for example, lets say you're trying to sneak up on a guard to knock him...

    D&D 5E (2014) Q&A 10/24/13 - Monsters description, Subclasses for multiclassing

To me, this marks a return of having to plan a character instead of letting it grow organically. I'm not impressed.

Licensing, OGL and Getting D&D Compatible Publishers Involved

The OGL d20 SRD did put a huge emphasis on the d20 system development during 2000-2010 or so, though. So much so that publishers who might have otherwise made new games or supported non-d20 systems went for the ease of developing for OGL games, which is mostly, but not exclusively, d20 based...

What are the last three things you've played.

I run a D&D 4e game set in the high seas, island hopping, city states vying for resources, that kind of thing. I'm also running a sandbox FATE Core Fallout game set in Toronto. I also run Dungeon World. Mostly one shots. I don't have a campaign going at the moment.

Any RPGs that focus on roleplaying instead of combat?

Character constraints are incredibly important to many roleplaying games, whether it be social, mental, or physical constraints. How much of a constraint is present upon the character is a matter of taste, but saying that a character's ability to aim a gun is fundamentally a different thing than...

What are your last three RPG purchases?

Dungeon World FATE Core I don't remember what I bought before those. It's been a while.

Any RPGs that focus on roleplaying instead of combat?

I like to think of roleplaying as the fiction of the game. Roleplaying rules are, thus, those that deal with the fiction instead of being strictly action resolution rules or descriptive rules. Obviously there can be a lot of overlap and gray areas between the two, but that's what makes sense to...

Any RPGs that focus on roleplaying instead of combat?

This is the best thing about FATE. It actively rewards you for playing to character, whether its using a Fate Point to get a bonus because it falls in line with your character or getting a Fate Point when something bad happens to your character that fits the character. The give and take of what...

    NON-Action/Adventure Games

Thought of another possibility. What about Monsterhearts? I know very little about the system, though.

Primetime Adventures is the best I can think of.

Eep! That boils down to a game of Russian Roulette. Take turns pulling until the tower falls or until somebody chickens out.

That's the one! I don't own it personally so I can never remember the name.
