Any RPGs that focus on roleplaying instead of combat?

Fiasco, The Window, GUMSHOE, Everyone is John, Call of Cthulhu, Prime Time Adventures, and Dread off the top of my head focus less on combat or combat is not the preferred method of dealing with problems. For example, in The Window a fight is resolved the same way as searching a room. FATE...

    Running proactive campaigns

Isn't this basically what a sandbox game is? The players explore the world, take on whatever challenges they want, and the story comes out in the reaction of the world to the PCs' actions. But, there are degrees to player proactivity. I'm currently running a game set in the Fallout world where...

    Favourite Non-D&D games?

My go to game is now usually some flavor of Fate, whether that be the new Fate Core, the Dresden Files RPG, Spirit of the Century, or whatever. Fiasco is a ton of fun. For one shots, Dungeon World is amazing (could make a good campaign as well but haven't tried it), as is Night's Black Agents...

Licensing, OGL and Getting D&D Compatible Publishers Involved

Not to speak for dmccoy1693 but back in the '90s with the Internet becoming more popular, people were taking the fan material that at this point was the norm, and posting it online. There was huge backlash from publishers about this kind of thing. Look up the response of TSR, as well as other...

    Looking to brainstorm "better" plots

Why not just ditch the fantasy for a while? Shadowrun 5e is out. Star Wars has a new system, too. I'm running a post-apocalyptic game that's a ton of fun, and there are endless ways to take that genre. There's also pulp adventure, which is a blast. You say you're familiar with the Dresden Files...

Licensing, OGL and Getting D&D Compatible Publishers Involved

To attempt to simplify it, the Open Gaming License is a contract that says "I'm going to make specific parts of my game Open, so anyone can use it." There is no content in the OGL. It's just a contract. Anyone can take part in the contract. What Wizards of the Coast circa 2000 did was create a...

Licensing, OGL and Getting D&D Compatible Publishers Involved

I really think a distinction needs to be made here between the OGL and OGC. OGL does not mean the D&D SRD or even necessarily d20. Fudge is OGL, after all.

D&D 5E (2014) Sneak Attack: optional or mandatory?

I absolutely agree. I would be intrigued by a roguish class that had a list of abilities that could increase adaptability and wouldn't be reliant on any particular specific ability. I am also a fan of powers that aren't just numerical but add some kind of options.

D&D 5E (2014) Sneak Attack: optional or mandatory?

I think in this thread people have repeatedly pointed out how a daily spell selection is completely different than a character build that can't be changed (or can only be changed every several levels through retraining). Spell lists are also much more granular than other options all the other...

D&D 5E (2014) Sneak Attack: optional or mandatory?

I'm going to take a stab at trying to explain why I think it would be a bad thing for the game to present the option to decrease ability in one pillar to excel at another. I prefer to have PCs who can contribute equally but differently in all situations. I like proactive, invested players, who...

D&D 5E (2014) Sneak Attack: optional or mandatory?

When I say "A fighter can climb up and drop the oil." and you respond "Not with all that armor they wear, and their lack of sneaking ability" how am I supposed to take that other than you claiming that they can't climb and sneak? I'm not setting up a strawman, as even N'raac seems to think...

D&D 5E (2014) Sneak Attack: optional or mandatory?

At this point, I can only surmise that you have not read the D&D Next rules very thoroughly, as armor gives no penalty to climbing, and its a straight up Str. check making the fighter a good climber. Beyond that, as long as they're not wearing certain types of armor, a fighter is perfectly good...

D&D 5E (2014) Sneak Attack: optional or mandatory?

*EDIT* Look. I disagree. Anybody can do those things. A fighter can climb up and drop the oil. A wizard can hide in the dark and shoot people with a bow. A cleric can be the decoy. They can all do all of those tasks. And they all have "kewl powerz" so I don't know why you think taking away the...

D&D 5E (2014) Sneak Attack: optional or mandatory?

Come on, Mistwell. Rogues get two offensive combat powers. Two! They get Sneak Attack and Ace in the Hole. That's it, unless they're Assassin subclass, then they get Assassinate (which requires Sneak Attack), Poison, Stunning Ambush (which requires Sneak Attack), and Death Strike. Take away...

    D&D 5E (2014) Old settings coming back?

What if they didn't release any setting books, but instead just released a set of adventures for each? I think that would be much more awesome than picking up another Dark Sun core book. Have something with real teeth to it, ya know? I'd love that!

D&D 5E (2014) Sneak Attack: optional or mandatory?

A scroll or spell to a wizard is not the same as a magic short bow. And, lets not pretend like we're only comparing the rogue to a wizard. We have to compare the rogue to the fighter, the cleric, everybody. And they use magic weapons as well. So, unless you're giving the rogue better magic...

D&D 5E (2014) Sneak Attack: optional or mandatory?

You're right, of course. The edition is still in playtest, and anything is possible at this point. If we're talking best case scenarios, I think the problem with Sneak Attack is that its all eggs in one basket. Divvy it up, and you've got more to play around with. So, reduce Sneak Attack's...

D&D 5E (2014) Sneak Attack: optional or mandatory?

It's kind of an apples and oranges situation here. If you're 3rd level and find that your wizard isn't doing so hot in combat, all it takes is picking an offensive spell when you level or the DM placing an offensive spell in some treasure. There, done. You're "fixed." A rogue who foregoes Sneak...

D&D 5E (2014) Sneak Attack: optional or mandatory?

The thread has been really light on specifics like that. I don't think we're just talking about sub-classes, since some people have been (I think) talking about a more general approach where its part of character creation - choose Sneak Attack, or X, or Y, or Z kind of thing. A combat ability...

D&D 5E (2014) Sneak Attack: optional or mandatory?

For the record, I'd be fine with a rogue trading Sneak Attack for another combat ability.
