    D&D 5E (2014) On the Planes

The Gatehouse stood as a testament to how old the Cage really was. Not even the most well lanned whitebeard in the city knew who created it or what it’s purpose was. The structure consisted of a huge building encircled by a great wall just inside the Hive Ward. The giant courtyard was in the...

D&D 5E (2014) Character play vs Player play

That doesn't match my (perhaps limited) experience. In my experience, people want D&D to be D&D. They don't treat two editions as entirely different games the way they might treat, say, Shadowrun and Burning Wheel.

D&D 5E (2014) Character play vs Player play

iserith I don't think the player was specifically unreasonable, I just think that they had different expectations on how to play D&D from previous play experiences that were very, I suppose you could say, rudimentary. He didn't appear to understand how to overcome a task via anything but the...

D&D 5E (2014) Character play vs Player play

Thing is, in Dungeon World, you can't make any roll without GM say so. So, you may end up with something like this: Player A: "Hrothgar rushes in to attack the ogre with my dagger!" DM: "The ogre laughs as he smashes your dagger away, and counters by swinging his other fist down toward...

D&D 5E (2014) Character play vs Player play

It in no way comparable to the action resolution mechanic for D&D 5e.

D&D 5E (2014) Character play vs Player play

In my mind, there can be loose ends left lying around, but the game absolutely needs a satisfying resolution so that the players can see, keeping with the TV example, the end credits begin to roll. In a mystery TV show, the protagonist defeats the bad guy of the week, or whatever, and maybe a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Favored Soul: Overpowered?

I DM the game, and if Tides of Chaos is used, its implied that I call for a wild surge to refresh it immediately, in that same spell casting. That means that casting Chromatic Orb with Tides = wild surge and Tides is back for the next spell. That does mean 1-3 wild surges per combat, but I love...

    D&D 5E (2014) Favored Soul: Overpowered?

Wild is pretty strong. Do not underestimate advantage on, effectively, every single non-cantrip spell attack made, and often cantrips. They simply do not miss. The wild sorcerer in my party has missed once with non-cantrips over 8 sessions so far. That's with twinning generously. Also, she has...

[UPDATED] RAGE OF DEMONS! New D&D Storyline Features Drizzt, Underdark, & Demon Lords!

Of course! "Well, Drizzt had grown so rich, he wanted to retire. He took me to his cabin and he told me his secret. 'I am not Drizzt Do'Urden', he said. 'My name is Ryan; I inherited the swords from the previous Drizzt Do'Urden, just as you will inherit it from me. The man I inherited it from...

    D&D 5E (2014) On the Planes

Early the next day the group sat at a cafe just across and down the street from Thesidass’s shop eating breakfast. The shop itself didn’t have a sign, or a name for itself really. Neogi didn’t see the point in such things. They watched the shop discreetly for about an hour. There was a little...

    D&D 5E (2014) On the Planes

Mehen was across town in the Lady’s Ward going about things in his own way. As a member of the Fraternity of Order, he had access to all kind of information about the running of the city that most people either couldn’t access or would have to wait months on. Having just finished filling out his...

    D&D 5E (2014) On the Planes

Mozzy walked into the Horned Berk to meet one of her contacts. Carmine was an oddity, a figure cloaked from head to toe. Fully robed, gloved, and wearing a plain white mask, people wondered and gossiped about who Carmine really was, even if Carmine was a he or a she or what race might be found...

    D&D 5E (2014) On the Planes

Session One - The Cursebreaker The rain poured down across the city, leaving dirty soot puddles on the ground. Tomorrow hopefully the rain would subside, but then the bellows would blow even more ash into the air, and clouds of smog would replace rainclouds. In the meantime, the Mimir, a pub...

    D&D 5E (2014) On the Planes

I hadn't run a Planescape game since around 2007. Over five years! This is coming from someone who ran Planescape games from '94 to... well 2007. It's my favorite setting, and its what I love. So, when D&D 5e was released, my goal was to go back to Sigil and do a crazy urban-based campaign. It's...

D&D 5E (2014) Proficiencies don't make the class. Do they?

So, the wizard artificer subclass should have A different spell list (maybe even a lower spell progression ala paladin) A different sized HD (d8s maybe) More weapon and non-weapon proficiencies A different skill list with more options A unique familiar Different casting mechanism (no...

    Evocative Names

There's a trope for that! The Noodle Incident. Tolkien used this frequently (although a lot of it came from the then-unpublished Silmarillion). The Blue Wizards were a good example of this.

D&D 5E (2014) What awesome thing happened in your game recently?

A sorcerer wild surge caused three out of four 3rd level PCs to be caught in a fireball that knocked two unconscious and left the dragonborn paladin injured. Luckily the cleric was just outside the blast radius. No enemies were harmed in this blast, although they were very confused. The PCs...

    ThirdWizard's Magic Item Bazaar

Worldswell Weapon (warhammer), legendary (requires attunement) Worldswell is an intelligent warhammer, and one of five crafted by dwarves in their war with the elementals. This warhammer was made to fight creatures of earth, and its driving force is their destruction, although it also wishes...

    ThirdWizard's Magic Item Bazaar

Getting back into the swing of things, I just made a slew of magic items for my new 5e game that just got to level 4 this weekend! So, I thought I'd resurrect this old thread of mine and start updating, even though its a new edition. Swapping magic between the two isn't all that difficult, and I...
