If that was the reason, why don't the rules say so? Getting martial weapon proficiencies is also possible with feats, that do not have prerequisites.

The problems with ability prequisites is that they either don't make sense or are redundant. For example, Str 15 is a given if I want to fight with STR. If I want to fight with DEX (either light weapons or archery), why care about STR at all? Either way, ability prerequisites for anything are...

A bonus to a certain type of Charisma check, commonly referred to as a skill.

Is it? I mean, apart from Dis/Ad it's the only rule that hasn't changed in any packet, beginning from the very first one. To me they appear very set about that. That pronouncement appears to be moot with the current iteration. Expertise doesn't work without skills either.

Druid seems to be lacking an update. They say so in the Read First concerning Wildshape, but that probably applies to spells as well. Cf. Cleric. Using the current Druid for multiclassing is especially odd as the Druid of the Land gets additional spells by class feature.

I guess our mileage to clunkiness differs.

I don't like that there are spells called Smite and a Smite class feature for Paladin. I think that leads to confusion. There was much complaint last time that non caster have too little choice. Apparently they chose to do something about it. There is such a rule. First extra attack at...

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L Sept 16th . The Latest on Skills

That's not what I meant. You declare that you want to train a certain skill. We assume that requires a feat or other opportunity. Normally you would receive your skill at full proficiency instantly. That has been criticised, although it is the typical effect of a level based system. So, if you...

Even easier would be to have new skills increase by use until they arrive at their full proficiency bonus. +1 for every failed roll or so.

I think the distinction is useful, though maybe not necessary. If you have an appropriate tool for a Skill, you get bonus. If a lack the tool of a Tool Proficiency, you get a penalty.

For what? If they stick with implements from the last packets that would cover it. And it's only useful for attack spells in the first place.

    You can convert the proficiency bonus to a proficiency die: +2 -> d4, +3 -> d6 ... +6 -> d12. I guess, that's why the bonuses stop at +6.

The one positive thing about this, as I see it, is they want to get rid off attack bonus by class.

Three Traits of a Good Class

Class is a short key for the type of character. If you would ask "What's that again?", there are too many. I do not consider the GM to be so central for the campaign set-up. If the world belongs to the GM, the chars belong to the players. Otherwise both is shared by everyone.

Three Traits of a Good Class

With a class model like that classes become meaningless. You could take a point buy modell or free traits. It makes sense, if you turn it around: Make a character, then tell us which organisation teaches this specific combination of tricks.

D&D 5E (2014) Classes, Subclasses, and Object Oriented Programming

Eh, no. That's not what framing means. Framing is the way you talk about things, the terms, metaphors and relationships you use. When you say something, you activate a whole lot of related concepts at the same time: The frame. Choosing a fitting frame, is a very clever way to manipulate others...

D&D 5E (2014) Help me out on character customization here please

D&D was never good about building characters after players imagination. It's strong point is making a character, if you don't know what you want. Pick this, pick that, go. If I want to play a character as seen on TV, I'd take Gurps, Fate, The Pool, whatever. For what that's worth, I don't think...

D&D 5E (2014) Classes, Subclasses, and Object Oriented Programming

Why do you all frame magic in terms of "sources"? That notion presupposes that magic is an "energy" or "substance". On the other hand we can frame magic as a method, a certain way of doing things.

It did in 3rd edition by the standard rules. I would be quite happy, if psioncists had a bonus against dispelling and a chance to work in antimagic.

Or there is no arcane magic. If I'm not mistaken a divine /arcane split isn't referenced anywhere in the rules. Also "arcane magic" is rather meaningless by itself. A "mage casts arcane spells" is a tautology. In what way are arcane spells different from other spells? As soon as we try to...
