Presentation and Rules Are Different Things

I really liked 4e's presentation. It was really clear and legible, vastly superior to 3e. But the rules and ideas were for a game I didn't want to play. I'd bought the slipcased three-volume bundle unseen. I gave it away without ever trying to play it.

Presentation and Rules Are Different Things

I'm not terribly demanding about presentation, provided it's readable. A few examples of failures on that front: D&D 3e used a graphic background for most pages of its PHB. I'm significantly red/green colourblind, and found the background made reading the rules pretty hard. That was the point...

WotC How much does Hasbro / WotC impact your feelings towards D&D?

I started playing in late 1979 in college. After a while. it became clear to me that TSR were fairly deficient in knowledge of many fields, and made many mistakes in their rules and worldbuilding. When I started reading Dragon, I saw the contortions they went through to avoid admitting mistakes...

    “Monstrous” NPCs

I GM fantasy in what seems to be an unusual way. I treat every sapient creature as a PC that I'm looking after because their player isn't participating. None of them are interested in getting pointlessly killed, so I don't have "mooks."

It's been so long since the last GURPS edition, that the present day is now in the "future" tech level

    You're using 4e TL8; he's using the 3e TL8. They are different, confusingly so.

It's been so long since the last GURPS edition, that the present day is now in the "future" tech level

Yup. The moving parts of the system are more visible than in many game systems, but they have fewer hidden interactions. There are a couple of articles about running GURPS without using most of the rules in issue #5 of The Path of Cunning, a fanzine I co-edit.

The Most Creative TTRPG Settings and Milieus

Glorantha is very different, wonderfully strange, and has a lot of internal consistency: different people looking into its mysteries mostly come out with similar conclusions. It's a good example of a magical world where the effects of the magic have been considered thoroughly, as opposed to...

    What makes a successful session?

To me, a successful session involves accomplishing something. The characters have found out something significant, solved a mystery, progressed past obstacles, or otherwise feel they've done something worthwhile. They have changed the setting, a bit or a lot, and possibly changed themselves...

It's been so long since the last GURPS edition, that the present day is now in the "future" tech level

The basis for Tech Levels changed at 4th edition. In 3e, it was largely on the basis of how much energy you could harness. Now it's mostly about the smallest things you can make and use. If it is revised again, there may well be another basis. Predicted futures always tell you more about your...

    What are your go-to dice?

There days, mostly playing on line, either the Roll20 /roll command, or the Javascript dice roller a friend wrote. For face-to-face play, either some of the custom dice I designed in 2015-16, or Dwarven Stones metal dice I don't have a picture of.

Are there any Alien Invasion RPGs/Settings

GURPS Mars Attacks is a horror-pulp-comedy setting based on the trading card series. It seems to be out of print.

What bespoke RPG is actually really good for other types of campaigns?

I may have some responsibility for that. Robin Laws guest-starred in my politics game at a convention in summer 2001, playing George W Bush.

What bespoke RPG is actually really good for other types of campaigns?

I found the Dying Earth RPG worked well for playing a parody of modern politics. Since the game is about inflating your own importance and misleading your fellows, this wasn't a surprise.
