Describe your last RPG session in more than 5 words.

The PCs work for MI6, under cover as the crew of a Short Empire BOAC flying boat. We were sent to Lisbon in Portugal to bring the Duke of Kent home from a trade visit, then our orders were changed, and two RAF Sunderland flying boats arrived to take DoK back to the UK. Our new mission is to...

Spells: do you prefer Rotes or Dynamic?

One thing in Rote-based magic that I doubt anyone likes is "pre-selected spells." That was the idea, which I first encountered in AD&D1e (PHB, p. 40), that spell casters had to memorize specific spells to have them available to cast in play, and if you wanted to be able to cast the same spell...

Quick, while everyone is focused on the 5.24 PHB...

It depends if you count En Guarde as an actual RPG, rather than a precursor to the form. If it's an RPG - and I'm genuinely unsure - it was my first non-D&D family RPG. If not, I'm not sure, but it might well have been the first edition of DragonQuest. Incidentally, anyone who'd played the game...

    Reinventing the Wheel

Very different from when I started in 1979. I doubt I'd played D&D for ten weeks before I was exposed to Traveller and En Garde, and after three months I was already looking in shops for other RPGs in search of new ideas.

    Reinventing the Wheel

That would have required everyone who published anything to produce an SRD, and someone to enforce that rule.

What year did you start? Do you think being exclusively d20 that long is a common experience?

    Canada Worldbuilding

My Cold War Pulp game, set in 1950, has had a segment set in Canada, where it was discovered that someone ("probably a mad scientist") has been uplifting seals and (accidently) polar bears. There may be a sequel to this. Canadian tropes used so far have been: people being reasonable and...

Is there any genre or theme that the TTRPG medium does not work for?

Having had to cope with it, it creates areas where you don't go unless you really need to, or you can turn immaterial.

Spells: do you prefer Rotes or Dynamic?

The systems I like best are Ars Magica, and GURPS' Ritual Path Magic. Both allow you to improvise small effects quite simply, and do larger ones with preparation. In Ars Magica, those are spells from the book, or which the character has put time into. Given that characters usually one have one...

Is there any genre or theme that the TTRPG medium does not work for?

You don't, but nor would I expect a group of RPG players to perform a musical. I've played scenarios about the production of operas, and they were about the production: getting finance, finding cast and crew, developing special effects, and so on.
