A Discussion in Game Design: The 15 minute work day.

We've seen several answers and solutions to this 15-minutes work day, and I'd liked to summarize them a bit. First, I'll try to explain what's the problem with the 15-minute work-day, and why it can hurt the gameplay experience. Then I'll go through some of the interesting things posted here...

A Discussion in Game Design: The 15 minute work day.

It's hard to say why I disagree with this, because you can certainly see it as a solution to the resource management problem. First I don't see resting as a solution to resource management. It's resetting or cheating the problem. For me, the solution is the path from full resource to no resource...

The villain has just pulled a dirty trick: Is that worth extra XP?

I would give extra XP. this is just a disguised trap. Villains are supposed to use these too, and the PC's are supposed to get XP for that challenge. The trap is outside of the CR powers of the NPC (levels + gear), and should or be treatened as an NPC with improved resources (+1 to CR), or as a...

huzzah! had good times playing it =).

A Discussion in Game Design: The 15 minute work day.

I totally get what you're saying, but I disagree on some vital premises. Let me start of saying that I never played 4e, and play Pathfinder. I'm going to try to explain why I see the 15 minute work-day as a gameplay failure, aside from the narrative attractive " acting heroic". Resource...

    Are gamers chronic loners

Young groups (20-24), in which I have a relationship with another player and one other has a relationship (and had plenty of them). The rest...yeeaaah, no love doctors. Although we're mostly Computer Science students. As if one stereo type wasn't enough to make us losers =D.

Obscuring Mist and Gust of Wind

Thanks! Could it be that, since Gust of Wind is a line effect, the gust removes the mist in the line, but the mist outside the line is removed in 4 rounds due too sudden changes in currents etc.?

Obscuring Mist and Gust of Wind

I have a question about Obscuring Mist and Gust of Wind. Obscuring Mist says that a moderate wind (11+ mph) removes the mist in 4 rounds, and explicitly notes Gust of Wind as being a moderate wind. Gust of Wind however notes that it creates a blast of wind, aprox. 50 mph. How do I interpret...

A Discussion in Game Design: The 15 minute work day.

I think resource management is an important part of most RPG's, and not giving them full control over their resources would probably be annoying. What if time is of the essence? Or the PC's want to go all out with their new powers? Resource management is part of strategy, and up to them. That...

A Discussion in Game Design: The 15 minute work day.

I'm currently running a kingmaker like pathfinder, which makes these heroic chain of events kind of hard. Some of the bigger dungeons could benefit from the milestones though. I think the biggest charm of multiple encounters between resting is fighting on the line, with little more to spare...

    Controlling the Cohorts

I would just do the first, but let the DM decide wether it goes with the personality of the cohort. Battles can have the craving to become too slow even without cohorts, and the checks would not only slow down the game, but push in a mandatory routine. Nobody likes mandatory routines.

    Slow Advancement Rocks

Hehe, my players would kill me if I made them level so slow. For us, 13 encounters in a level to develop a character, hence we play fast advancement. I prefer playing 2 campaigns shorter in playtime then one long one.

So, I've decided that I hate roleplaying

You roleplay more then most of my players. Heck, one players background used to be "amnesia", and I'm fine with it. Roleplay for me is more about making the world look real and alive, not about talking in first person. Only difference I have with you is that I don't mind people playing dumb...

What point buy system do you use?

oh yeah, thats right. I didn't allow the 7 or more then two dump stats. Only the sorcerer played it min-max to the max, dumping wisdom and strength, but he feels pretty balanced with the others, some of which didn't take an 8 at all. In the end its how you use it, not how your stats are.

What point buy system do you use?

For 3.5 I used 25, which worked fine for most classes in the long run, but gave some players a hard time in the first 2-3 levels. Using pathfinder, the 15 points worked excellent for everyone. If you're experienced players, the 25 could be seen as a healthy challenge :P. It's do-able.

    New DM help?

Assuming that your players also didn't play (much) and aren't very familiar with the rules, it all might seem a bit intimidating. It's much more important to create a fun first game then to create dungeon masterpiece. 3.5e has more rules and possibilities then Greece's national dept, and it's...

We Are All Neutral Survivalists: Alignment in a Complex World

Can't say I agree with these alignments, or play them this way. As Firelance said, good vs evil is more of an idealistic thing then a pragmatic thing. I can't see how a LG Paladin will totally sacrifice himself, without the possibility of a reward, if he's being pragmatic. Also, I think the...

Pathfinder 1E Sell me on Pathfinder

Maybe just a little detail, but if you didn't like the spells per day because of the limited early arsenal of the spellcasters, it has been improved aswell. Orisons and Cantrips can now be casted at will, with no limits per day. This means that even without any level 1 spells left, the...

    How do they survive?

Real life cats don't deal 1d2-4 damage. I swear. The system is just scaled on what attacks would probably lethally hurt men. If you want a PC cat, maybe you should change the rule to 1d0.2 +0.1 or something ;D.

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Character Creation: Point Buy or Roll of the Die?

I too don't like to roll for stats, because it quickly can lead to permanent unfairness in the team. With some luck, the sorcerer can get a few high ones (like the fighter of the post above me) and another one wouldn't even manage to get a +3 bonus on something. Sure, point buy out encourages...
