Something Essentials won't solve (DDI rant) and proposals for new char. sheet format

The .dnd4e file is just XML. Feel free to write your own XSL transformation for it. As an example, check out iPlay4e.

    The Essential Donkeyhorse

The donkeyhorse, when dead, is also great for beating. Gotta get that nerdrage out somehow.

Is there a DM tool for organizing my thoughts?

If you have Word, have you tried Microsoft OneNote? It's not templated, but will allow you to organize your thoughts any way you want.

D&D 4E Converting Builder (*.dnd4e) files into other formats.

Well, the .dnd4e file is nothing but a text file with XML in it. XML is usually transformed via XSL into other markup such as HTML. XML can also be parsed by any number of other programs and converted into something else. Those other programs need to know what to do with the data though and are...

    Interesting house rule from gabe@pennyarcade

Isn't this what passive perception/insight are supposed to allow? You may be in combat, but you're still scanning the environment and your adversaries. You could then just give out the additional info to someone that gets close to an interesting object.

companies staying away from rpg gamers

The blog reads pretty true to me. There's a large segment of gamers, at least on the internet, that are total jerks and drive people away. Did anyone see the recent writeup up DnD Encounters at ArsTechnica? It was a pretty light piece. The author played some DnD and had fun. He even suggested...

WotC should make an online SRD....

I've seen the books you can get off the net. Quality isn't "straight from Indesign", but it's very usable and has been OCRed. The numbers of seeders and leechers seem to be about the same as well. You can't stop pirates. They will find a way around any DRM scheme. You rarely need to watch a...

    Negative Bonus?

I'm wanting to take the Cleric power "Divine Aid", but have a negative Cha modifier. Since it's a bonus, does the negative apply, or is it just zero? And if it does count as zero, where in the rules does it say?

    Does the shardmind seem overpowered?

I'm kinda annoyed that the shardmind gets real telepathy while the psion class gets a really gimped version. Easy to houserule, but the cantrip-like abilities for the psion could have been better. Or at least made equal with a feat.

A Concern About Wizard's Race Designs of Late

I liked the new races and am playing a minotaur currently. I see the wilden as a pretty generic stand-in for any number of fey creatures like pixies or brownies. The shardmind has a special place for me because I wrote up something almost exactly like it (or did WotC copy me?) for a 3.5...

WotC and brick and mortar retail stores - Greg Leeds weighs in

Gotta wonder about the guy being in Michigan, which has Detroit hanging around the state's neck. That can't help business. I was in my local game store this weekend (Austin, TX) and it was packed. Can't say how much people were buying, but there was usually someone at the register.

First Impressions from the D&D 4E "Test Drive"

I saw that after posting. Looks like a time zone thing and a simul-post. Either that or I just spaced out.

First Impressions from the D&D 4E "Test Drive"

No one's mentioned the wizard spell concern yet, so I'll tackle it. In 4e the idea is that most of your wizard powers are "adventuring spells" and mostly combat focused. In the full game, there are also a new class of spells called rituals. Rituals are where most of the wizard and cleric...

    Gametable modification

Bath/shower board from home improvement stores works well for whiteboard. It's cheap and pretty easy to work with. Just be sure to tape where you're going to cut. I also used a special panel-cutting blade for the jigsaw and got smoother cuts over a standard blade. Height should be about the same...

Are you using battlemats or similar visual representations in your games?

We use a PC running MapTool hooked up to a 52" TV for a battlemat. The DM runs MapTool on a laptop and is the main orchestrator with a player controlling the party via wireless mouse/keyboard. We still do the rolling and calculating with dice and pencils, but track status effects in the program...

    Min/Max your Min/Max'ing

Those dang kids with their hula hoops and hamburger sandwiches. They'll be the death of us all! It's just like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an...
