What didn't people like about Greyhawk From the Ashes?

Was there information on this in the 1983 boxed set? I didn't think the sheild lands were occupied back then. It sounds interesting, and I'm wondering where to find stuff about it. Thanks.

What didn't people like about Greyhawk From the Ashes?

There was also the article Risen from the Ashes which was an overview of types of campaigns you might want to run, themes, levels, places to locate them that would work for those themes, etc. It was in issue 291.

    Drawing from famous stories

Thanks. For some reason I thought the answer would be more esoteric than that. Got to love the Internet.

    Drawing from famous stories

Any recommendations are where to find the pre-Mallory Arthurian stories? Regarding what to take ideas from, I'm thinking the 1001 Tales, and Mythology. Pick any that interest you - Norse, Greek, Indian - all have themes and adventure hooks you can expand on.

What didn't people like about Greyhawk From the Ashes?

Not necessarily odd. Perhaps the people concerned with not starting a proliferation of settings are now gone and replaced by people who only care about the dollars and cents, i.e. proliferation of revenue and profit.

Would this be fair to the party? (My guys stay out, please)

It's not unfair if you give them a chance to understand the danger, and are willing to let good ideas and/or good die rolls result in PC victory. It's of course also fair for the overpowering force to strategize agains the PCs if they know of them beforehand, and stack the odds in their favor...

What didn't people like about Gygax's Greyhawk?

What dots were present to connect besides names and some sparse exposition? Maybe I didn't see it. I'm wondering what you'd use an an example for demonstration purposes.

What didn't people like about Gygax's Greyhawk?

I concur. Without buying adventures as separate products (because they had the ideas), there wasn't much interspersed throughout the text that would result in adventure ideas just springing to mind throughout reading the books. The setting didn't come to life for me. And it's true that there...

What didn't people like about Gygax's Greyhawk?

I'm a fan of gm customizeability, but I have to agree with Umbran that at some point you draw the line and say that what you have is more a set of names and a straw man than something that is an evocative and imaginary place in the minds eye.

What didn't people like about Gygax's Greyhawk?

It's tough for me to identify what is intentional vs just the way things were done back then (like level of detail, etc.). I will say that one thing I didn't like was the quality of the writing, as separate from any of the ideas contained therein. I would have rather had more info on the...

    Best level to play?

7th or 8th - have 4th level spells, but not 5th level spells yet.

    Overarching Plots Vs. Self-Contained Plots

Kudos to you. This seems like a great way to handle the prep and planning side of keeping a long term campaign going and fun as well.

    Overarching Plots Vs. Self-Contained Plots

I don't think they inately are. And even if they are, the length of your arcs needs to serve not just as theory, but fit into the reality of how much time you have to play, how long your group will stick together, and how quickly everyone wants to finish and move on to other campaigns, parts of...

Why don't more people play high level campaigns? 13th+

My highest campaign stopped at level 12. Even at levels 9 though I started noticing the extra time that would have to go into preparing NPCs, and considering the different options PCs had to approach both combat and investigation elements of adventures. It would have been easier I think had I...

Slaughtergarde - more than a long dungeon crawl?

The title pretty much says it. Is this a multi-level dungeon crawl mini campaign? Flipping through it, the maps basically look all like dungeon rooms and corridors. It makes me wonder if there's anything more to it than that. I'm not likely to have a good time with 6 levels of the same/mostly...

Is there a book or URL that tells you how to make a fictional modern city?

I would just rename a published city, and liberally pull from any city products that inspire you (and the real world).

    My homebrew monster sheet

Thanks for sharing. I'll try them out. At first glance, I think I'll find the 2007 version more useful.

Lead-in to Cormyr: Tearing of the Weave

My first choice would be start at 4th unless you already have something that you specifically want to run because you're already excited about and/or if your players really prefer to start at first level and "work their way up". No point in looking for stuff just to fill in a few levels though...

What didn't people like about Greyhawk From the Ashes?

Was it deliberately left vague, or was that simply driven by the typical supplement length at the time? These days we have 200+ page setting books like FR and Eberron, and similar lengths from other publishers. Back then, books were like 64 pages or 96 pages. I'm open to the idea that details...

What didn't people like about Greyhawk From the Ashes?

If you want to run during the wars, find "The Complete History of the Greyhawk Wars" online. Cherry pick the events from the war that you want to build adventures around. Separate from FtA itself, I'd personally use, and so recommend The Marklands, Iuz the Evil, "Risen From the Ashes" Dragon...
