    D&D 3.x Creature Catalog 3.5 Overhaul Project

i've kind of stalled out on this one for the moment, but i'll come back to it eventually. ;) i do know where you're coming from. the thing is, to make a template for 3.5 psuedo-undead, to be totally true to the original source... for most of them it really wouldn't be much more than adding...

Converting monsters from the second edition Monstrous Compendiums

i can't see the plant moving around, being that it's firmly rooted and always described as immobile, but severed pod denizens would be able to get around until they too take root. i could see giving the 'sipper a Dex score, but no more than 10 if we do. i'll consider the rest of those scores...

Converting monsters from the second edition Monstrous Compendiums

cool. :) any opinions on ability scores? it's a non-intelligent plant, first off. since the main plant doesn't move, we were considering no Dex score. the Con, IMO, should be hefty, so at least 20 and possibly quite a bit higher. the Str may not be a major factor, so it should be less...

Converting monsters from the second edition Monstrous Compendiums

That’s actually much more useful! :) Let’s give that a shot: Vulnerability to Salt (Ex): A bloodsipper or pod denizen is affected by a quantity of salt, and will pull away from salt convulsively. If an opponent throws a handful or flask of salt as a grenade-like weapon, a direct hit deals...

Converting monsters from the second edition Monstrous Compendiums

i'm going to go back and proofread that, just to be on the safe side. if i get a chance today, i'll work on some flavor text and see what else needs to be done for this guy. forgot about this: don't know what dragon mag i'd look in, but the other one was easy enough to find. note that this...

Converting monsters from the second edition Monstrous Compendiums

OK, you asked for it. ;) To sever a bloodsipper’s pod denizen tether, an opponent must make a successful sunder attempt with a slashing weapon. (The player should declare where the attack is aimed before making the attack roll.) Making a sunder attempt provokes an attack of opportunity unless...

Converting monsters from the second edition Monstrous Compendiums

great! :) the only change i would make is to say "ignores any concealment penalties imposed by the vines" instead, as that would cover creatures who treat it as heavy undergrowth (because, anything trying to move without being detected will treat it as heavy undergrowth, whether it makes the...

Converting monsters from the second edition Monstrous Compendiums

good. ;) 5 x 12 = 60, which would be fewer hp than a 20-HD creature would have, even with a 10 Con. :) just want to make sure the plant wouldn't be killed just from severing the tethers... i'll have to look that up again - isn't it essentially that any damage not specifically intended for...

Converting monsters from the second edition Monstrous Compendiums

understood. ;) OK, the GoFP writup mentions that severing the tether does not harm the pod, but i don't think it said anything about whether it harms the bloodsipper or not. i'd say that yes, it does harm the main plant. 10 damage seems like a lot, even if the plant should have more than...

    Converting the Dukes of Hell

well, i can certainly see why Mammon and Baalzebul don't jump - given their anatomy - maybe Dispater is too dignified to jump. ;) oh well, whatever, we can assume that anyone with an anatomy suited to Jumping would probably take the skill.

interesting! the other bolded ones make sense, but i'm not so sure i get this one. ;)

    Converting the Dukes of Hell

sorry to interrupt. ;) OK, so we'll take this list primarily into concern with each duke, before thinking about what other feats would make sense for each one.

    Converting the Dukes of Hell

when we're ready, we'll start with Avernus. since there are so many dukes on that layer, we can break it up into 2 parts as follows. Amduscias and Malphas (Tiamat's dukes), as well as outcasts Nergal, Bist, and Caim from Dragon #75, as well as Moloch, Amon, and Herodias who are now outcasts as...

Converting monsters from the second edition Monstrous Compendiums

fair enough. how's this blurb for combat text: A typical bloodsipper can start an encounter with as many as 12 pod denizens. It can only attack as many foes as are within reach of its pod denizens. here's what im imagining - let's say that if a bloodsipper is 600 square feet, its dimensions...

    Converting the Dukes of Hell

yes, on the skills & feats. and SLAs for that matter. as for the fear aura, i was noting that nearly all the major devils had a fear power - some were an aura, some were by touch, some by gaze, i think i even saw one that had it as a breath weapon. ;) i'd prefer to handle that on a...

    Converting the Dukes of Hell

Formula for a Duke of Hell: Hit Dice: Chart will determine how the HD converts, characters with * have a chance to “move up” one. Armor Class: Total AC will be equal to CR +18 – 1E AC (which, of course, are all negative numbers). AC minus Dex mod, bonus from items, and misc bonuses = Natural...

    Converting the Dukes of Hell

hmm, well, i don't like the "hey, they all get a deflection bonus from using items!" cop-out, so, eh, what the hell, we'll give 'em straight up natural armor for now. if we find that something works better as we work on them, we can always change it. so, in the interest of having all this neat...

    Converting the Dukes of Hell

OK, so, let’s get a quick recap to see how we’re looking and see what else we’re missing. Hit Dice: Chart will determine how the HD converts, characters with * have a chance to “move up” one. Armor Class: All will have insight bonus equal to Wis score. Total AC will be equal to CR +18 – 1E AC...
