    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing discussion

The mechanics could match to my vision if that vision were of a guy who under miraculous conversion suddenly has his entire ability score array re-aligned. In either case, as the rules stand, it may require house ruling or an advance module to rebuild. In my current vision I'm imagining a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing discussion

My take is that the ability score requirements work pretty well for a dual-class character concept if you've planned it out, but not so well for a 3e style multiclass decision made after some progression. edit: Though I do prefer dual class characters better than willy nilly multiclassing...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing discussion

I think it's less precise assassin abilities stopping a change in direction, and more to do with the ability score requirements. If someone wants to take a level in order to badly cast a cleric spell every now and then, I say let him. Maybe feats could fill that niche better than full...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing discussion

Most of the the arguments for "Just re-fluff the mechanics of your assassin with the divine direction your character chooses" seem to be from a "I'm not a big fan of 3e multiclassing anyway" perspective. That's fine; I'm not overly invested in 3e style muliclass. BUT if you're going to have 3e...

    D&D 5E (2014) More about the Warlock. L&L March 3

Yeah, so far the only effect patron seems to have for sure is a few optional spells laid on. An infernal pact might get burning hands, while a fey gets... charm person?

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing discussion

All this talk of real world priests doesn't really speak to me very much about a fantasy world cleric. What if I want to play a scoundrel rogue who suddenly has a conversion (a la Saul of Tarsus, but I said no real world examples, sorry) and becomes a chosen of his god to wield divine power...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing discussion

Yet there are plenty of priests that are also drug addicts. Go figure. not to say that there's a preponderance of junkie priests, but there's nothing preventing priests from having some pretty harsh vices. I think bringing real world examples of priests with issues isn't really the way to go...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing discussion

Who's to say a made up church in a fantasy setting would not accept a former assassin? Hell, who says this former assassin who has a religious conversion decides to tell the church the full details of his former life? What if they accept him under pretense, but his conviction is enough to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why I Think D&DN is In Trouble

That's interesting. I started with 2nd and got back into D&D with 4e and skipped over 3e entirely. I've witnessed the opposite problem with people that knew 4e, but then went back to try out 3.5 or pathfinder, and were annoyed with game stopping to figure out all the "complicated" details...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wandering Monsters: Worlds of D&D

Yeah, I don't have a problem with using the same stats for dwarves when they're similar, but it does pose an issue when you start bringing up things like completely hairless Athasian dwarves. Those, and any "pure rock" dwarves, etc would definitely need a new write up and possibly different...

D&D 5E (2014) How They Should Do Feats

I really do like how feats are being implemented in this edition, but I do wish that there could be a feat at level 1 perhaps. I remember it mentioned before by Mearls that a possible way to address the dislike of human ability scores would be to maybe give humans a feat at level 1? I wouldn't...

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

If I'm playing a video game where I cast a fireball at a guy, watch it explode and he's still running around getting hurt, but then he's still standing at the end because he has a lot of hit points I don't blame the game for being unbelievable and behaving in bad faith. Why should I do that...

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

Try hitting a common human, and then try hitting a silverback gorilla, carnivorous or not. The gorilla is going to take a whole lot more punches than the human. Have you seen one? They're massive. It's going to a lot more punishment before dying than a common human. And a fantastical 3 foot...

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

I'm still not sure what it is about a splash weapon that kills any idea of simulation. It is imperfectly modeled sure, but not to the point I can't understand why it was modeled that way in the first place . The problem doesn't extend to explosions like a fireball -if I'm understanding...

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

It's an option for fighters. That doesn't equate to an optional rule. It's a base rule (in this playtest doc anyway) that everyone at the table has to play with if one fighter chooses it. To say you can't use it is a house rule. As far as past gaming experience... this whole edition is...

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

Why not try to find a better way to model splash damage then? It's been said over and over that folks are willing to buy the less than perfect conceit that an explosion or splash damage takes up an area of effect. If your main issue is a simulationist one, then solve the simulation problem...

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

The more I think about it the more I think I might too. A certain amount of skill can make it easier to negate the worst effects of an explosion, but to end up completely unscathed by the random chaos of a 30 ft ball of fire? That takes pure luck. Maybe it would interfere with improved...

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

What if... and I'm not really arguing about damage on a miss right now but rather saving throws. A lot of the argument has turned into arguing about how saving throws are inadequate to area of effect attacks because we don't have precise 3d modeled simulations of explosions in a game that...

    D&D 5E (2014) "Damage on a miss" poll.

Why can you not take for granted what people tell you is their reasoning for things? Just because my believability has a different threshold than yours does not make mine invalid. I say alchemist fire isn't as unbeliveable as you say it is. After numerous examples of WHY it's not as...

And he had to work at it until he progressed enough to pull it off at 11th level. I do like that better than starting off that way at 1st level. I'd also prefer if his inability to miss with GWF was modeled by his skill and attack bonus increasing, not some clumsy "my meta fiat ability says"...
