Return of the Burning Plague (Updated)

The Burning Plague was the first 3rd edition mod I ever DM'ed, and the first time that I had DM'ed at all in about ten years. I have the fondest of memories for that free! gem of an adventure. So thanks for doing this, and I'll definitely check it out!

Gary Gygax has passed. RIP beloved father of RPG's. (merged)

I got the Basic Set red box and the Expert Set blue box for Christmas when I was 12. Still probably the best Christmas present I ever received, and have been playing now for 20 years. Thanks, Gary. RIP, my friend.

D&D 4E Are Talents Trees still in 4e?

Word. Keep restrictive talent trees in Diablo 2 and WoW (both great games, not bashing them). But I like to create my D&D characters in a more free-form, random chunks of fun-or-weird abilities style. I also love the separation of combat vs utility powers. This means that those sweet utility...

SW Saga, Trained Skills, and Multiclassing?

Anyone know how Star Wars Saga edition handles trained and untrained skills and multiclassing? Do skills that were once trained become not so when you MC, and vice versa? Is multiclassing an easy way to get more permanently trained skills? Or is it some kind of hybrid system where players are...

    New Player's Handbook Cover Art!

Now that I've seen the mock-up, I'm convinced. The party v. green dragon pic *IS* D&D.

    New Player's Handbook Cover Art!

I'm 'meh' on the new PHB cover, but the cover to the DMG is great!

New screenshots of character visualizer, virtual tabletop

Anyone else think that the female faces look too masculine? Maybe they're not all that way, but in 2/2 examples. Yikes.

    Diagonals revisited

I hereby nominate diagonal movement as the 'Tempest in a Teapot' change of 4th Edition. No effect on roleplaying, miniscule effect on combat, and easily houseruled by those who don't like it.

    D&D 4E Is Intelligence 4e's dump stat?

This might swing back to making Intelligence too good, but I think it would be great if everyone got to choose a trained skill for each point of Int modifier (or even every two points of Intelligence modifier).

Low Damage, High HP ... How is this "Faster"?

If Bo9S can be used as any kind of a template, the big damage will come from specific powers. Sneak Attack is, as has been suggested, a 'freebie' for when you can't hit with the big abilities. A lot of people have problems with per encounter powers, but I think they work really nicely in this...

    Class Training feats and obsolescence

I hope that they can pull this off. If the different class powers are balanced against eachother at every level, then there is no reason that we shouldn't be able to have characters with a few other powers from another class, so long as they pay the feat for the flexibility. This would also...

    Perception v. Spot

So I know this is old news, but the preview 4e spined devil card has a number for Perception (+5, iirc) and Spot (+10, iirc). Has anyone discovered what the difference is between these? I'm glad that the designers have decided to collapse a lot of skills, but in that light this dichotomy seems...

Death and Dying: Annoying new subsystem reduces fun.

You don't need to drop to -60, you just have to be dropped to 0 and then roll under 10 three times before being healed. The average then, is six rounds of life before you die, regardless of negative total. I like this because the negative HP number currently gives PCs a (metagame, but still)...

Death and Dying: Annoying new subsystem reduces fun.

I've always hated the revolving door of death in 3.x (and in some of the previous editions). The new system looks to be an enormous improvement. If the trend continues that this new edition is inspired by Star Wars, mooks there die at 0hp just like monsters do, and I assume that's how...

    Twenty plus one

Agreed. As in, the titan Prometheus who was chained by Zeus. This is a fairly common motif.

    D&D 4E Owen Stephens Thoughts on 4e

"But there's a catch?" "Of course, Catch-22. You can't say anything positive, because your words will be perceived as empty and false, in any case without merit; being that saying anything negative is strictly verboten. Additionally, those upset that you can't be specific in your praise will...

    ORCS or Half-Orcs?

I for one would be delighted if orcs replaced half-orcs as a core PC race.

    Gearing up for 4.5

My gear-up plan is to wait five years after 4.0 comes out so that I can upgrade directly to 4.5. When it doesn't come, I will get 4.0... a year before 5.0 is announced. Then I will come back to these boards and blame it all on WotC, Freemasons, and Colonel Sanders' secret blend of herbs and...

    Monster Pantheon vs Racial Pantheon

The real question is whether deities are created by belief, or whether belief follows from boons or acts originating from deities. If its the former, than every culture should have its own gods. If its the latter, than they shouldn't. Now, they could have different names for the gods, and...

    Per Encounter vs. Unlimited

Because resource management is part of the fun of D&D. While the Vancian system took this to an extreme that many (including myself) don't like, having per day, per encounter, and minor at will abilities preserves the tactical richness of resource management, without leaving people standing...
