    Diplomacy vs. Red Dragon

If the dragon were a bit larger and more powerful, it is always interesting to have the dragon demand one of the party as lunch, but offer to let the others go free in return. This often leaves a look of utter shock on the faces of the players. That is diplomacy red dragon style. Then again...

Another WOTC Setting Search semifinalist speaks...

The common thread of these submissions (a golden age; where the ancient empires have not fallen; etc.) makes me wonder how much use the actual winner will be for me. I and my group hunger, truly hunger for a low fantasy setting, something to balance the egregious and overly fantastic excess of...

    Too Twinkey an item?

I would agree with Geoff's pricing. 1800 for command word x 2 for spell level x 9 for caster level would be 32400 each, half if you made them. Since there seems to have been some strange cooperative making scheme, I'd split the difference (75% market). Note that 5 times per day would be the...

Shane Hensley comments on the RPG industry

Some gaming groups will simply roll up new characters after a TPK and keep going in one fashion or another. We don't like to do that; it cheapens (at least for us) the new characters, the second-stringers. If we simply start the module over with new organically grown characters, then we all...

Shane Hensley comments on the RPG industry

Well, many gamers, especially those who have been around for literally decades, are now at a point in their life where their time must be broken up between many, many responsibilities or commitments. I have other things I can spend time and money on that help to to relax or have fun. Learning...

Shane Hensley comments on the RPG industry

The problem is that such a product would be an enormous risk for a publisher, except for one that had all of the necessary resources on staff (WotC six months ago could have pulled it off). It would take over a year to assemble such a product, and who knows where the industry could have gone by...

Shane Hensley comments on the RPG industry

Same here. We had a guy drop his $30 or whatever on the RttTEE, and we had a TPK. Now what to do? We had played those characters from 1st, building them up organically to the required level for the super-mod. Starting new characters artificially at the higher level would not have been cool...

Wall of Force... best 5th lvl spell !

Re: Re Measurement in 3E is done in 5' increments. Unless your caster is laying on the ground, pointing his finger through this gap, his line of effect (from hand or eye level) would be broken by a hemispherical WoF just an inch off the ground. If it was opaque, it would be granting total...

Wall of Force... best 5th lvl spell !

As a DM, I've found that I have to be really careful with this spell, because it can quickly lead to TPKs. I would restrict the hemispherical version to be centered on the caster. There are spherical wall of force spells already in the game: Resilient Sphere and Telekinetic Sphere. And both...

    DM Seeking advice:Disintegrate Counters needed

Well, for the same reason that the equipment is not a good choice, I would also say that you simply couldn;t disintegrate it. If it has to real matter/mass, you can't disintegrate it. May seem like a cheesy rule-0 to some, but it makes fine sense to me. -Fletch!

    Cleric over balancing the game

The Top Five Underrated Prestige Classes

Well, with rapid shot and possibly haste, getting 4-6 arrows per round, you run through those 50 arrows pretty quickly. Unless your party members are willing to pour spell slots into supporting you, you'll run out of magic arrows pretty quick. That is why AA is not weak. If AA seems weak, you...

    epic wands??

Heck, only the feat is important. You could use craft staff to make an item the size of a wand. A pixie staff would be a human wand. Think of it like the enlarge or reduce spell. While you may enlarge or reduce a potion, you still have to drink the whole thing. If you enlarge a wand, it...

    Elven spellcasters at rest

It's called trance. See the PHB p120. It was reverie in 2E, but it was cut because that was even more stupid than trance. Seems trivial, but the details are everything... Some skills use is passive, like spot, listen or intuit direction. Other skill use is more active, like craft...

How much do oversized golems cost?

I would do it proportionally to the hit-die increase. If it has double the HD, then double the cost. However, I am a big fan of reverse engineering otherwise unpublished mechanics. That is cool, and I will use it in the future if it ever comes up. -Fletch!

Intensified Epic Staffs (something is wrong)

I don't have ELH in front of me, but the standard formula for a spell save DC from an item is 1.5 x spell level + 10. This is to reflect the increased intelligence necessary to cast the spell. Metamagic increases do not figure into this calc, except for heighten spell. -Fletch!

    [Item] Staff of Buff

    question on harm spell.

The short answer is that is says negative energy, in both the PHB and the SRD. While it does not bestow negative levels, anything that protects against negative energy should block it. -Fletch!
