    Universal RPG's not Universal?

Right around the same time I posted my earlier comment, GURPS author Sean "Dr. Kromm" Punch posted this in a thread on RPG.net. It comes down to what you're looking to get from an RPG. GURPS says, "You can do anything. Here's the toolbox. Start sawing." If you change genres a lot, and have...

    Universal RPG's not Universal?

I have a couple of problems with universal systems, which I've experienced both True20 and GURPS. The first is the amount of prep you have to do before you have the first game and the second is the blandness of the books. My first choice as a GM is to decide what kind of adventure we'll be...

Help Me Remember RPG Combat System

Burning Wheel was the system the friend was telling me about. So that's the one I was thinking of when I said "rock-paper-scissor."

Help Me Remember RPG Combat System

I bet if you posted this question over on The Forge board you'd get a quick answer. I recall someone once describing this system to me, and he was very much into small press game playing. The description had a "rock-paper-scissor" quality to it.

Harry Potter, D&D, and the children's market

Do you fear that kids will abandon RPGs or just the RPGs you play? I'd like to take your word, but I don't think you have any data to back this up. I'll bet Peni's hypothesis has more to do with the sustained success of gaming during its first 30 years. I don't think the urge to teach your...

Harry Potter, D&D, and the children's market

There was a Pokemon RPG that came out about five years ago. My kids got one. It had a narrative book and large 4x6 cards for each pokemon you could collect. The book that came with it contained adventures that an adult would read as the set up, and the child would then interact in. I think...

How to handle a dud of a party

My wife and I have gotten to the point where if we throw a party, expect 1/4 to 1/5 of those who say they'll be there, will be there. I've found when you talk to those that don't show up about what happened, there always seems to be a good excuse. Back when our kids were smaller sometimes...

    Ott Lites - a review

I got the big "tsk, tsk" from several professional painters about using my Ott. Some people think the light cast is much too blue. Personally, I use my Ott, with the shades open and two other lights on when I paint. If it works, go for it!

What options are you really happy you allowed into your game?

Action points and combining skills (balance/tumble now acrobatics, spot/listen now notice, & move silent/hide now stealth).

What is Desert of Desolation and what to expect for figures?

Well that stinks - I'll probably have my current desert adventure rapped up by the time these roll out. I'd suspect the set will have some kind of scorpions, the races that appear in Sandstorm, a mummy or two, and some desert-y looking heroes.

Game design that I'm surprised didn't make it into more books

That's where tools like Hero Forge come into play. It takes me about ten minutes to stat a 15th level monster.

Game design that I'm surprised didn't make it into more books

I think D&D 3.5 has addressed this problem for the past two years. Besides creating more adventures, many of the critter books (Lords of Madness) and landscapes (Sandstorm) have large sections devoted to running adventures with statted monsters and such. While they may not be complete...

    Meetup.com

AFAIK the only problem with Yahoo! Groups is that searching by area is difficult at best. Whereas meetup.com you can search by zip code, with Yahoo! Groups it's only by name. So if your local D&D group decides to call themselves "Local Dragonslayers 420" you'll have a hard time finding them.

    Meetup.com

I was a regular at the North Dallas RPG Meet.up and that went well - usually 10 to 20 people per session. When I moved across town I co-chaired the Fort Worth RPGers and we had maybe four to seven show up, ranging from "I played five years ago and looking to get back in" to "let me tell you...

    Published or homemade adventures?

I've learned to use published adventures, but I make modifications to meet my group's needs. I just finished running my 4th Level players through a 1st level adventure in Dungeon 141 (Mask of Dreams). The plot structure and important NPCs remained the same while I changed out the monsters...

20 Minutes of Fun ... and for How Much Money?

I'm sure the OP saw his investment in GURPS as a good one because the core books are generic. But the two books can only get you so much, so you feel the need to purchase more GURPS books to run a space campaign (or weird WW2) as these add additional character options and rules governing ship...

20 Minutes of Fun ... and for How Much Money?

The 4th ed core books (2 of them) run about $80 MSRP. The first book has everything you need to create a character, and the second book on running combat and doing everything else. I'm in the same boat as the OP. I had two GURPS snobs ('D&D/D20 is sooo broken') convince me to buy the books to...

Tome of Horrors 3.5e, not bad

Bought the pdf last night as part of the Christmas in July for less than $8. Quick question on ownership. I used one of the monsters (Demon - Nabassu) in a one shot adventure that I'm thinking about submitting to the upcoming True20 magazine by RPGObjects. How can I include it? Do...
