key mechanical elements for a cinematic/swashbuckling game

It's not just D&D that penalizes cool actions - even Feng Shui makes doing cool things harder, despite the over-the-top martial arts focus of the game. Robin D Laws said it's the first thing he would change if he ever did a new edition of Feng Shui. EDIT: Off-Topic-ish - how "revised" is Iron...

key mechanical elements for a cinematic/swashbuckling game

Hong's Iron Heroes house rules look pretty darn cool. Let me see if I can scare up a link... Here you go: http://www.zipworld.com.au/~hong/ih/

key mechanical elements for a cinematic/swashbuckling game

You could get rid of all of the various conditions in D20 and use a single condition track like in Star Wars: Saga Edition. This will speed up play, and possibly make combats more dynamic because the only thing differentiating condition effects is player description and how far down on the...

Ryan Dancey on Redefining the Hobby (Updated: time elements in a storytelling game)

It's an interesting post, but the comments that occur after the post are even better. I love the idea that turns or rounds or what have you last "as long as it takes to get to the next decision point." I had no idea that a lot of wargames had gone down that path - I need to start checking out...

Ryan Dancey on Redefining the Hobby (Updated: time elements in a storytelling game)

I wrote about the Dragon's Lair on my journal, but since people are discussing it over here, I figured I'd share a bit. I wasn't sold on the voting mechanic (I think the first poster over there mentioned that, too). I'd rather just assume that all of the "secrets" that the player's write about...

D&D 4E 4E Core Rulebooks- how can the layout organization be improved?

Plentiful example maps are a must, but they should be part of clear guides to the conventions and successful creation of maps, encounters, and adventures. The main focus should be on traditional site-based adventures, but other ways to organize game sessions and adventures should be covered...

You are not alone in thinking that having a Killer App would be absolutely fantastic. This thread doesn't deal with 4th edition, but it's well-worth reading: http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=203938

Help Psion pick a game to run!

I had so much fun when I ran Spirit of the Century on a lark. It was the first time I had gamed with that crew for a long time and no one besides me is particularly "hard core". Two of my friends were so impressed that they've recommended Spirit to people they've met at random in game stores.

I'm with you. I really really don't like Ron's writing. It's the big reason why I haven't picked up Sorcerer, even though I've liked every game I've ever bought that said it was influence by it.

D&D 4E Will 4E be crunchy or smooth?

I'm with AMG - I think that the developers recognize crunch as one of D&D's assets, or at least something that a significant portion of players want to see. From what I've read so far, I think they're going to get the "smooth, easy crunch" thing down. As Robin D. Laws put it, “Heinsoo. Wyatt...

Ryan Dancey on Redefining the Hobby (Updated: time elements in a storytelling game)

"Story Games" has some appeal, and it's already being used, but it has a heck of a lot of baggage. I totally agree with whoever said upthread that stories have a teller and a listener, (or an author and a audience, more generally) and that D&D Players are not an audience. Plus there's the...

Seconded! I've played through the original Seiken Densetsu (the black and white Gameboy game known as Final Fantasy Adventure stateside) and Final Fantasy 4 (originally released as FF2 here) more times than I can remember.
