What system of magic do you use?

/This Right now I'm running Shadowrun so we have drain style magic. If I was running D&D I sometimes will use spontaneous spell points instead of fire and forget.

An Odd Thought Occured to Me about RPG's.

I think thats more of a specific case. In the commentary he liked to say how he was a "Say Yes" DM but yet his actions in the podcast were not that of a "Say Yes" DM as he repeatedly said no. For myself houserule is a dirty word because of a history of DM/GM/Storytellers I had who didn't...

    RPG Adventure for a 4-year-old

    Dancey v. Mearls?

Evolve or Die... Really thats what has to happen to RPG companies and FLGS. Some of which have already started the Evolution. The old way of doing buisness will eventually die off, but there is still plenty of time left.

    How was your first time?

It was 1985, I was 7, my 13 year old friend's dad had this funky looking board game called dungeons and dragons in the closet. We decided to play it along with his 8 yr old sister. We played it occasionally along with monopoly, sorry and other board games. No DM, no storytelling, just rolling up...

Settings and stories the rules can't handle (or don't handle well)

Sure... but I'm not going to pull out D&D for a Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon game when Wushu exists. Wushu does that style of play much better. Its like you can use a flat head screwdriver to remove a philips screw, but if you have a philips screwdriver already why wouldn't you use it? In your...

Settings and stories the rules can't handle (or don't handle well)

Tolkien wrote quite a bit about how magic worked that has been published since his death. Here is a decent post about it The Grey Havens - Middle-earth: Magic in Middle-earth you wont find game mechanics but he did have very strong ideas about how it worked.

    Steampunk

I love Abney Park :) I havent been to Steam-con yet but I intend to. I would dress up if I had the extra cash. So far I haven't found a Steampunk game that I like other than Arcanum. Victoriana came close but the religion in it was too close yet changed (and the mechanics are wonky). I'd rather...

Metaplots - it wasn't just TSR that did them

nWOD and oWOD are not in the same world, its more like a parallel dimension than a progression.

Settings and stories the rules can't handle (or don't handle well)

I have 5 games (Ars Magica, Mage, All for One, Desolation, & Dresden Files) on my shelf that all use a form of improv magic and one that uses spell slots (D&D) ;) just saying its not that odd when you step out of D&D. Other than retro and d20 clones I don't know of another game that uses spell...

Settings and stories the rules can't handle (or don't handle well)

Cool, one of the problems I foresee with the improv is what do you do when you run out of 5th level slots? In most of the improv magic fiction I'm aware of the limiting factors on spells is usually wanting to be subtle, you can cast all day long. In most of the games that use improv magic...

Settings and stories the rules can't handle (or don't handle well)

Drain Magic When a caster casts a spell the caster takes damage. You can cast spells till you die, thats the only limiting factor. (the potential problem I see with this in D&D is healing magic as they dont have a drain stat) Improv Magic You make up your spells on the fly. There is no spell...

Thanks! The "computer hacking" in cyberpunk is a VR dungeon crawl though. Not that your system doesnt work (orc becomes virus or whatever). I look forward to reading your improv and drain magic systems.

Does one of those handle improv style magic? how about drain style magic? theres 1001 systems out there no reason you have to use D&D.

How did you handle star ship combat? As I would consider that pretty shoe-horned. Also computer hacking if you had a cyberpunkish setting.

Shadowrun - Help Create Simplified Rules

I know your trying to be funny but the answer to that question is yes (sort of)... because I make it all up on the fly as we go and i don't care about every stat just are they below average, above average etc. In what your looking for seriously look at Wushu or maybe Fung Suei (Sp? I never...

Shadowrun - Help Create Simplified Rules

Wushu? Also the Digital License for Shadowrun is complicated at best between Tops and Microsoft. Wait? What? Maybe in your world but in my world Joe the security guard is married to Marie and has two kids Todd and Jenny. They live in a small apartment in Everett and have dinner with his cousin...
