WotC Dungeons & Dragons Fans Seek Removal of Oriental Adventures From Online Marketplace

This situation somehow remembers me of a post in my favorite band's Facebook when they went to the US for the first time after more than a decade without playing there. The post said something like "Yes, after all that time, we'll tour the Western Hemisphere again!" Well, the only problem was...

D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd - What am I missing? (Possible spoilers?)

Many of the official modules are full of this stuff. Things like "if you say the right prayer to the right god in front of this statue, you get a magic weapon"...

D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd - What am I missing? (Possible spoilers?)

It appears that part of it was really your DM don’t knowing what to do with it, but it being an easy walk is not the DM’s fault. 5e is an easy game by design, it takes some work to run it in any other way.

D&D General So what colour are your dwarfs and elfs?

In a published campaign setting, as described for it. In my own homebrew, the only change I've made that seems worthy of notice is describing drow as being really pale instead of black-skinned, as it appears to make sense for an underground folk. I usually describe surface races as mixed types...

D&D General The Importance of Page 33

As Luke Crane once stated, as soon as you start a campaign where magic is gone, you'll have a player who wants to play the last wizard of the land. I used to believe that allowing a player to be the last wizard, the last elf or maybe the first half-elf was somehow demeaning to my campaign...

D&D 5E (2014) UA Monk Way of Mercy - Have you tried this?

I remember it, and I still have the same feeling it’s suffering from a lack of focus. You should be allowed to spend additional points for increased healing at higher level. At the same time, there should be something preventing the monk from healing the party fully with 1-2 short rests.

D&D General Two underlying truths: D&D heritage and inclusivity

I like the idea of an in-game explanation for orcs as a non-evil race by default. I’m afraid that will take to that branch that remains evil, much like drows now. The fel orcs from Warcraft. I’m glad WoW players do not campaign for fel orcs as a playable race! 😂

D&D General Two underlying truths: D&D heritage and inclusivity

I can only talk about our reality, but probably yes. In fact, they used to be more expensive. As a middle-class teenager living in one of the richest parts of our country, I could only afford the AD&D 2e books as birthday/Christmas gifts from my parents. Growing up, I could skip lunch and save...

D&D General Two underlying truths: D&D heritage and inclusivity

I'm from a developing country where your existence as part of a racially excluded group is deeply related to what you can or cannot afford. Most people here are at least a bit mixed race, so "your skin gets fairer as you get a bigger bank account" is a real thing. For a Brazilian, there's no...

D&D General Two underlying truths: D&D heritage and inclusivity

I'm offended by the Chardalyn Dragon. At $79.99 it remembers me that some of the coolest things about this hobby are only for people who have a lot of money to spare, which is not my case, with a 1-yo son, an unemployed wife, and 1 USD being about 5.30 BRL right now. I think the existence of the...

D&D 5E (2014) If not the word "race", what word instead?

I get his point, but this is hardly about being era-appropriate, it's more about how one feels about it. The fact that we keep remembering episodes of psionic powers manifesting in fantasy stories doesn't prevent some people from stating that they are too sci-fi for D&D.

D&D General Two underlying truths: D&D heritage and inclusivity

The 2e DMG, while giving guidelines for the creation of new PC races, states that the character should be the alignment listed for that monster in the Monstrous Manual. This is the same source for no Int penalty for orcs since it also states that -1 penalty to Int should only be the case with...

D&D 5E (2014) 'The Thing' Inspired Rime of the Frostmaiden Has Player Secrets [Updated]

As we have yet to learn how the mechanic will work, I don't think you can describe it in this way (or any other, for that matter). YMMV, of course, but this does not describe our experience with CoS at all. I don't know. Maybe our group being huge fans of RL and doing a lot of gaming on that...

D&D 5E (2014) 'The Thing' Inspired Rime of the Frostmaiden Has Player Secrets [Updated]

I think it should be obvious that I'm not discussing the right tone*, pacing, interparty dynamics, or anything like that. I'm talking about picking up a module and working with it to create fun and engaging quests, encounters, interactions, and rewards for my players. CoS doesn't need a lot of...

D&D 5E (2014) 'The Thing' Inspired Rime of the Frostmaiden Has Player Secrets [Updated]

Many things in Descent into Avernus can be made more interesting if I put in some of my own efforts, but that's not what they get paid for. See Curse of Strahd? Many interesting avenues of play, no one asking for my effort to make them happen. Heck, you can almost run that campaign as you read...

D&D 5E (2014) 'The Thing' Inspired Rime of the Frostmaiden Has Player Secrets [Updated]

One of the authors described it as being about "climate change and the powerful magic of collective action". I'd be really surprised if it ends up with "more pvp" as a defining trait.

D&D 5E (2014) 'The Thing' Inspired Rime of the Frostmaiden Has Player Secrets [Updated]

I hope it doesn't turn out to be like the dark secrets from Avernus, which are basically irrelevant to the module.

D&D 5E (2014) If not the word "race", what word instead?

And hold monster can be used to hold creatures that are not monstrous at all. If there is one thing that would probably change the D&D books for worse, it would be to change the choice of words to appease the "well, actually" crowd.

D&D 5E (2014) If not the word "race", what word instead?

Still like Burning Wheel's stock. I can't believe species in on the lead. Now I know how the "your psionics are making my D&D too sci-fi" crowd feels.

D&D General Two underlying truths: D&D heritage and inclusivity

Well, they do get an Intelligence penalty, but can achieve the same 20 that any other PC race can, and are described as usually chaotic evil. Balance-wise, I'd say they lean toward bad, but not unplayable bad. Removing the Int penalty would probably help with that.
